That article says it'll come with the 1.8T? Is that right? You'd think they'd put the 2.0T in there.

Sorry my mistake. 170hp still seems a bit underpowered even for the entry level. I almost wish they'd just have the 3.2L and the S5 to keep the coupe a bit more exclusive. The new 1.8 would be great in the A3/4 (if it's newer than the 2.0).

170 hp is enough, it's the same as a 323i.

ah yes, American Hp....you know they think a 525i is underpowered? And that has like 200hp!
But it's so odd that their smallest engines are so big, I mean where's the 323 or 325 or E280 or whatever?!
And I wouldn't mind a 1.8tfsi A5 or a 323i for that matter. My mum has a 323 convertible and it's quick enough especially since she does town driving and isn't a street racer, and it sounds great. If it does 0-62 in under 9 seconds that's quick enough really. I have a 1.4 VW Lupo with 75 hp, and that's not the base engine, and it does 0-62 in 11.6 seconds. I could have had a 1.0! It's a town car, it doesn't need the power! But when the roads are all straight and wide, maybe you feel you need the power and don't need a small vehicle.
What's funny is even their economy cars like the corolla have 1.8s as base engines and the Golf and Jetta have a 2.3 5 cylinder! That's our old V5 golf engine! No 1.6 or 1.6 Fsi, no 2.0, and obviously, no diesels.

The US A5 is standard with the 265hp 3.2 V6, and the only other engine option right now is the S5's 360hp V8.

Didn't an earlier article say something about getting diesel engines? will they only offer petrol? :-\

Does it have the same Quattro as the A6 or some cheap AWD system without a Torsen ceter differential such as on a VW or an A3 for example? This question needs to be clarified as Audi uses the term "Quattro" to describe all their AWD systems, even the lesser ones. Too bad there is no automatic transmission offered in this article.

The Torsen is actually the better system, but Haldex is on the A3/VW models. A5 has Torsen, 40:60 split front/rear.

It would be pretty logical if they put a 300hp 3.6 in it, since that would be a more direct competition for 335i.

Sailor, just to clear things up about the "best car" ad, I don't think the S is the best car for ME-- I Just think it offers something for everyone, in every age group. The car that I'D most want to own? Some variant of a 911. Probably a Turbo Cabriolet.

i saw the s5 at ny auto show. pictures dont do it justice. it will definitely take away sales from bmw 3 series although the 3 series is just as good.
it will come down to the price. which ever has better lease deals and is cheaper to buy will sell better.
does audi have a free maintanance program like bmw ??????

I can't believe they are having a low end 1.80T engine on a coupe like that. They should make a V6 standard and have two models like the 328/335. Even the 328's numbers are getting .5 of a second too close to the V6 A5.

I think it's a stunning car though. The interior isn't as boring as the one in the 3-series. Apparently this is intended to be set above the 3series/CLK market because of it's bigger size.

Low end? Someone's obviously never heard of a 318i coupe. Or a 320i, 320d, 318d, CLK 200K or any of those smaller engined cars.

Yes obviously I've heard of those models. I'm simply comparing the price you pay and the engine you get. I think it's safe to say that with that price tag most of the cars within that pricing offers a V6 never mind the thought of 'bigger is better'.

I'm not so much a fan of the power but in my own personal view a car that is situated in a market littered with V6 or I6 they should at least meet the industry standard.

Feel no need to be offended as I only said low-end 1.8 because the 1.8 or 2.0 engines like that are offered in a Jetta, GTI, Passat, and even the Beetle. I think that since it is Audi they would change it up a bit. I never said it was a bad engine though.

No definitely not prestige issue here. I just think it should be a standard to offer a I6 or a V6 especially when it will be situated a little higher than the 3 series coupe market. It just doesn't seem right in my books to have a 1.8 or even a 2.0T for that matter in a car of this size. I know to some power may not be an issue but that's besides the point. 1.8T or 2.0T is way under powered.

I agree with you though as I doubt it will hit the US market. I also think that in North America where it seems to be the biggest in terms of HP wars people would prefer a more powerful engine for simple bragging rights. It is after all a sports coupe.

Agent, why do you (and everyone else) think that the A5 is bigger than the 3 Series? IT'S AN A4 COUPE. It is 183 inches long, compared to the 181-inch 3 Series coupe and 183 for the CLK!!!

...Here's the problem with Audi...
On 1/4/08 I went into the local BMW dealership sat down with the salesman and customized my 335xi coupe exactly how I wanted it, color of leather, options etc.
My salesman sent me 4 emails during construction of my car letting me know when it was in the body shop, when it was shipping etc. I felt like I was tracking my BMW through the entire build process.
On 2/15/08 my salesman called and told me my 335 was ready for pickup. 41 days and I had my 335 with all the options I wanted, EXACTLY the way I built it on BMW's website.

Tonight my brother went into the local Audi dealership and said he would like to customize an S5 and put an order in.
The salesman said something like - Oh we can't get any S5's, your looking at 10 months at the least and even that doesn’t guarantee you’ll get a car. And you can't really customize a build, you kinda just have to take what comes available. So for $60k you can wait 10 months and *maybe* get a car, and maybe it’ll be in a color you like and maybe have the options you want. My brother also inquired about storing summer/winter tires, to which the response was we’ll we don’t really do that unless maybe if you buy the tires here.
And on top of all of this the salesman NEVER stood up off his ass, he was sitting on a chair typing on a computer. My brother was so annoyed he walked around his desk to see what he was typing and he was typing emails! I know responding to his emails is important but for hell’s sake you’ve got a customer here who wants to buy a $60k S5 get off your ass and show some customer service.
Is this pretty much the way most Audi dealerships operate or do we have a really shitty one here?
If the sales experience is this shitty I can only imagine what awaits him should he need to use the service department!!
After this experience my brother is looking into a BMW 335xi coupe himself. It’s too bad because I love the S5 but with this horrible sales experience and Audi’s inability to build enough cars to meet demand just kills the deal for me. After this experience no one in our family will ever be walking into an Audi dealership again.
