New VW Boss Orders a Complete Overhaul of The Golf
The new Golf replacement due in 2009 and approved by the old regime has been sent back to the drawing boards.

Dr. Winterkorn, and Walter de' Silva publicly stated that the motivation for the decision was, that the new Golf must be the standard by which all cars in the segment must be judged by. In order to accomplish this task a redesign was ordered and the golf would be elevated to incorporate technological innovations unique to the segment.

Good! Maybe Winterkorn, and de' Silva can make the Golf the standard again. I mean it has been a best seller for years, but lately it is just very, very safe, to the point of boring. New Vee DUb Golfs need to be cutting edge. Great style, utility, versatility, and all. Hopefully they will also concentrate on quality as well!

To me golf has always been de facto standard of hatchbacks.

I love the current generation GTI, the next gen will only be even better.

The golf is still the STANDARD by which all Hot Hatches are measured.

The Mazda 3 defines what a hatchback should be in my opinion. Simple, intuitive, "fun," and cheap! It's what the Golf should really be about, like it used to be! VW should be careful just piling on technological advancements just to make it the best in class. I'm worried about the pricing of such a vehicle, specially considering that competitive pricing at similar equipment levels is not a VW strongpoint at the moment.
