No VW Scirocco for the US
Adrian Hallmark has been asking his bosses over at Volkswagen AG to expand the US vehicle lineup and after much push, his plan has cleared major obstacles set by his German bosses. But now, Automotive News reports that when it came to the Scirocco, Hallmark said “We don’t want it.”

Even though the popular vehicle, that VW produced from 1974 to 1982, has huge fans over in the US, Hallmark said that the new Scirocco would detract sales from the GTI. “The GTI is iconic — it’s as strong a name as the Beetle,” Hallmark says. “It is economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI.”

The Scirocco and the GTI share the same engine, chassis and suspension, except the Scirocco has been lowered for greater performance.

We wonder if you guys would give up the GTI for the Scirocco? Tough question.

Why, I know lots of people who would love to have the Sirocco..

Yeah, but that's not enough people to make them bring it here. The fact remains that hatchbacks don't sell well in America, examples include VW's own Golf/Rabbit.

It's very sad that hatchbacks are always associated with the word "econobox" in America.

Why does the US ALWAYS not get the good cars? All we have are un-exiting Camrys with Lexus badges...

Lexus...4ever, I can't ever tell if you're being sarcastic. You're either a Lexus fanboy, or a German fanboy, or some sort of odd combination of both. What do you REALLY think?!

I wish the Scirocco was coming here! It would give VW's image a much-needed boost, and hatches seem to be gaining popularity. It's only sensible that the Scirocco would be its halo hatch.

LexusNumberOne4ever, to your question on why america never gets good cars. simple economy, when there's no demand, there's no supply.

My choice is the 3-door GTi with DSG. I personally like hatchbacks a lot more than coupes.

Adrian Hallmark, executive veep at VW of America maintains that, "having six different coupes and hatchbacks would be crazy," I SAY WHATEVER!! They guys at VeeDub America are losing it. The Scirocco is a sports coupe with a hatch. Not a regular hatchback. Hell they always had had this lineup before with no problems. The Scirocco is for those of us that want something a little more special, stand out from the crowd. I think it is a waste for VW to develop it then to not offer it here. Why not try it out and let the buying public determine if they want it or not. The only reason I bought a GTi is bacause they had no Corrado at that time and I wanted a sporty fun VW. Guess I still won't be buying one.

The new Scirocco is definitely good looking. Wouldn't mind getting one as an everyday car. What are the engine choices? 2.0 turbo?

It's a shame it's not coming over. Hoping it's not as dissapointing as the new GTI.

Are you serious? It's the old GTI that was trashy. The new one is a huge improvement- every reviewer loves it (just like the A3 2.0T).

The old GTI was disgusting and the new one is not much better. Driven it? I drive a half dozen different ones on a weekly basis. Extremely disappointed with the suspension. Considering what the GTI was. Many more cars in its class that outperform it.
This is an article regarding the Scirocco and the fact that north americans get screwed once again. Thank you VW
