Next Phaeton To Be Based On The Audi A6 Platform

There shouldn't be a Phaeton at all! And it SHOULDN'T be based on an Audi!!!

Why would it be based on the A6, anyway? The next-gen A6 will have an MLP... something that VW won't use.

That means the Phaeton would even be smaller.

No, if you read the source article it says the Phaeton will be larger than the next A6 but smaller than the A8. Still, a pointless car IMO.

That's enough to make me think twice about walking away from my A6 when the lease is up.

You aren't making sense, the VW will be made on an existing Audi platform, not an Audi on a VW platform. There is a difference.

The platform was created for Audi use first, therefore the VW maybe a tad overengineered.

The trick is, the Phaeton probably won't be smaller, the A6 is going to get enormous.

I think that is a dumb move. VW DOES NOT NEED THIS CAR!!!! It is absolutely POINTLESS!!! VW is a mass-market brand so why would they try to move upscale?? To prove what?? As others have said - Audi developed this platform and it is a shame that VW would attempt to use it in their vehicles. Let's wait until we get real confirmation - you know how these publications are prone to missquote.

The Phaeton has done quite well in Europe and Asia as well as the Middle East. It's only in the US market where the Phaeton has been a flop. The fact that it was quite successful outside of North American warrants a next-generation Phaeton.

And don't forget that Audi is a VW company so they can use whatever platform they choose. It's all about finance.

Till now i have only seen maybe 6 or 7 Phaetons on the Road.
It was a good car no doubt but very pointless.

Difference between the similar speced Audi A8 and VW Phaeton was a mere 10,000 Dirhams (USD 3000)
2005 Audi A8 4.2 V8 330,000 Dirhams
2005 VW Phaeton 4.2 V8 320,000 Dirhams

Now tell me what’s the scope/life-span of such a car is. Will u choose an Audi or VW?
Even before it's lauch it was a proven failure/flop.

Do u know here in Middle East even Passat is a flop, because it's priced very closely with similar speced A6 (which also is only selling because of its big size, Arabs love big fat cars).

And which Asian market's u r talking about? It has never reached any market except China.

New to participating on this board. I couldn't stand by while such uninformed opinions are being given.
As DAN1122 has stated, "MY O5 PHAETON IS THE FINEST CAR I HAVE EVER DRIVEN"! How many of you have lived with this car? None would be my guess as only 5-6k were sold... Yet you feel entitled to pass off your uniformed opinion as fact? Well, you are just fooling yourself, not anybody who really knows the car.
I have driven my '04 Phaeton for 2.5 years and experienced nothing but extreme pleasure. It is unique and simply awesome luxury automobile. I don't care what label is on the car I drive (have owned MB, BMW, Audi, Acura, Infinit, etc)and, some of us actually like the VW badge! I live in a town that turns it's nose at fancy lables. Can your ego handle driving a car with a VW badge when you could have had a more prestigious one just because you like the car?
This core of the car is the basis for the Bently CGT and a number of elements are shared. I am not saying the Phaeton is the same as the CGT; of course it isn't, but it is much closer than most realize.
This isn't a canyon runner but a large luxury cruiser that is supremely comfortable, quiet and safe. The interior is a work of art, including the mechanical vent covers. And did I mention reliable? My Phaeton has run like a clock for years. And I get great service at my NYC dealer, Potamkin.
I certainly agree that VW blew the marketing on this car (I was after an A8 first) and can see why they would question the existance vs. an A8 but they are really different cars, each with their own chasis and personality.
I have to give mine up in December and I don't know what to do. I am depressed about it since nothing else I've driven has that "Phaeton feel". I want something smaller so the next gen A6 based Phaeton sounds good to me. But in the meantime it looks like an A6 4.2 or an E550 4matic. And I can't wait to check out the new 535xi...
Sorry for the rant but really guys, and gals, we Phaeton owners get what you are saying. But try to be a little open minded about what this car is like to live with. You might be suprised.

If you look at the interview with Rupert Stadler done by Fourtitude that is posted on this site - you will see that he said the MLP platform was designed for and by Audi. He said down the road there is a possibility that the platform could be used by other VW companies IF there are synergies. He basically stated that they don't really want to share (if you read between the lines).

Why VW? Don't do this, it will not change VW's image in any way. I've only seen 2 Phaetons and they were both in Canada. I've never seen any in the US nor Europe. This should not happen
