Green Lexus models for SA
Lexus, the premium brand of Toyota, is seriously looking at introducing one or more of the hybrid models in its arsenal as demand for the revitalised range grows - with Lexus currently outselling its direct opposition in each segment against BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
Speaking at the opening of the first stand-alone independent Lexus dealership in the country on William Nicol Highway in Bryanston, senior manager of Lexus, Brian Hastie, said interest in Lexus had grown significantly since the new range was introduced and the hybrid variants were a “definite possibility”.
The Lexus revamp began last year when the new IS250, GS300 and LS460 were introduced - the IS immediately becoming a finalist in SA Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Car of the Year competition and, although it did not win, the LS460 went on to win the World Car of the Year award recently.
Lexus has hybrid variants in each of its ranges - IS, GS, LS and the RX off-road - that operate on the same principle as the Toyota Prius where the engine automatically and seamlessly switches from electric power to petrol according to engine load.
Toyota, as the parent company, has firm policy geared to environmental issues with its cars and is actively researching alternate fuels and sources of power.

The Prius is currently the only hybrid vehicle available in South Africa.
“Close analysis of the Naamsa sales figures shows we are well ahead in sales against our opposition in the German camp,” says Hastie.

“Since its launch the LS460 has consistently outsold the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8 and is nipping at the heels of Mercedes-Benz - the only instance in which Lexus is not well ahead of its rivals.”

Capturing the high-end market is what Lexus plans to do with Luxurious and cleaner emission vehicles. South Africa is another example of this philosophy.

Again, consider how the 7 Series is six years older than the LS, the A8 is five years older than the LS, the 7 is $15K more base and the A8 is $10K more base?

Interesting to learn of Lexus' success in South Africa. The LS 460 is their only flagship model there (standard wheelbase), here is how it stacks up against the S-class, 7-Series, and A8:

A8 3.2 - R 684 000
740i - R 743 000
S 350 - R 750 000
LS 460 - R 780 000
A8 4.2 - R 812 000
750i - R 877 000
S 500 - R 940 000

IIRC the S and 7 offer LWB models in South Africa. Clearly there is a prestige premium, especially for the S 500 (which may be LWB). The LS 600h may be offered.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz specs show 5.4)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....
