Lexus prepares for the launch of LF-A supercar

Lexus is near to completing development for its first ever supercar, an upcoming V10-powered coupe based on the LF-A concept car. Although Lexus’ top brass have remained extremely tight-lipped on the subject, we can reveal that the new car will most likely feature a newly developed 5.0L V10 engine pumping out in excess of 500hp. We can also confirm that there will be a hybrid version, with earlier reports suggesting Lexus will use the V8 engine from the new IS-F combined with an electric motor.

A senior Lexus staffer in the UK, Steve Settle, who spoke with Motor Trader mentioned that the new car is being designed from the ground up, “something entirely different.” He then gave further evidence that there will be a hybrid model, explaining “it promises to set a fresh standard in the hybrid technology to which Lexus is totally committed and we are very excited about it.”

Performance + reliability cmon no brainer. The true question is can Lexus provide the visceral feeling provided by performance based manufacturers. Sounds like a winning ticket... Finally wealthy Lexus owners might be able to have their cake and eat it too!

Im not sure supercars owner's care that much about being green, so I think the hybrid version will be a waste of money, but other than that, based on the concept, it looks promising. I dont expect the performance to be out of this earth, since its a lexus.

Hard to digest so many pieces of Lexus good news in days. ^0^

1. 550hp from 9,000rpm 5.0L v10, super light weight, civilized version of F1 type gear box... this one is already knew.

2. More interesting is the hybrid version. By the time 2009, double powerful,half weight Li-ion battery is already in use, thus the weight of the hybrid system could be cut by half to 300~400lbs range. But battery alone is enough for hybrid sports car, another 100lbs have to be counted for the weight of Super Capacitors with extremely fast charging and discharging capabilities for on track driving.

So super light weight+~500lbs hybrid weight = ~3,300lbs, a Lexus hybrid super car with the 5.0L v8 hybrid: 450hp/torque equivalent to 450+lb.ft. Oh, no gas guzzler tax.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....

There was more than Lexus caught up in that, and a number of manufacturers had to be corrected due to an interpretation of the way horsepower was to be rated.

I am not a Lexus fan, but in this case there was no foul on Lexus part by any stretch. It seems almost every maker was affected to a degree.
