And it will do so while the competition is completely unable to respond.

I don't think the competition cares at this point. The vast majority of consumers in this class are very loyal to their brands for prestige reasons. Fuel economy is the last thing on their mind.

Also, was this a roadtest or a review? Because it sounded to me like these guys have not driven the car. They're merely reviewing it. There's big difference between those two, you know.

the summary statement at the top of the article says a lot too:

"Not as stylish as the S-Class and expensive, too, but undoubtedly special on the road"

also, this article referred to both the base LS and LS600h.

ok ok, now here TheSailor I have to stop you. You guys need to stick to ONE definition of "prestige", because of you keep changing your minds over it, it means that you guys have no clue what you're talking about.
So let me remind you of the German fans definition of "prestige" and your new one today.

Before "prestige" was that Lexus was a new company and not as old as the MB, BMW, etc..
Now, you just changed that and made it be V12 is prestige.

So my friend, define for me what "prestige" is please?

But answering your question as what's the big deal with a V8. The big deal is that, this V8 with few batteries, makes more power than the prestiged BMW v12.

Now, you might come back and say, well it doesn't match the MB or Flying Spur, or A8. But, you'll need to remember that all of these 3 have turbos and super charge on TOP of their v12. And believe me my good friend, if there is one basic thing to do to get more power out of an engine, is to make bigger enignes and put turbos/super charges on top.

LS600h, uses new technology to acheive that power of a v12.

In today's world of technolgy, I'll define prestige to you. Prestige, is the one that's more advanced. :-)

I don't think having or not having a V12 dictates "prestige", I think driving dynamics does, and that's where Lexus falls behind.

WillisWillis - 4/30/2007 6:54:35 AM

Prestige has nothing to do with driving dynamics. Prestige is built through history and time, through participation in motorsports etc.. Best examples, Daimler-Benz, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, BMW, Cadillac and Lincoln.

Lexus in my honest opinion has prestige, but it is not on the same level as the brands I mentioned above. Never has and never will. The fact that the above mentioned brands have been around for a long time, have a ton of innovations and contributions to the industry behind them (and still do).

Lexus has not really contributed much to the industry as a whole I'm afraid to say, especially from a global perspective.

I'm going to keep saying this, but 0-62 in 6.3 seconds is SLOW. That is the time Lexus has provided. Don't forget it's probably configured for better economy/worse acceleration in European cars.

Sounds like a test-drive for me:

"...Steering is light yet accurate and, thanks to the standard active anti-roll bars and variable pneumatic suspension, the LS leans surprisingly little through corners. The braking sys-tem is really effective and, despite its role in regenerating the 650V powerpack, feels just as precise as any other that we have tested."

The 7-Series, is getting really old and boring, it styling need an overhaul quick. The S-class need to change it headlight, look very similar to the Toyota Camry. And also the MB S-class need to redesign it rearlight, from the back it look like stripe to tape.

The Lexus LS460/LS600hl beauty is just stunning, it definitely going to change the meaning of luxury. The best looking one in it class.

Half-assed?! So suddenly, developing a brand-new twelve-cylinder engine is HALF-ASSED? Something tells me you just wouldn't be preaching that if Lexus had come out with a simple LS600L- a car that didn't just have the "power of a V12," but had a REAL V12!

The only car in this class that has a somewhat simple engine is the 760's V12. However, the S600 has twin-turbos and the A8L has the unique W12 configuration. The 760's engine, while not as special as the others, moves it along nicely. You just need to quiet down sometimes.

I think Leuxs will eventually make a super ultra luxury sedan or coupe to compete with the like of Bentley, Maybach and Royce Rolls. But I think that Lexus will have either a V10 or V12 under it hood. Than it would even out the competition and shut up the German nutt tree hugger for awhile. Lexus can make a super ultra luxury car for all I care that "competes" with Bentley etc. Because the sad truth is that Lexus has ZERO CHANCES of competing in this market. The shoppers in that class care about heritage and prestige. The names Bentley, Rolls Royce, Bugatti and Maybach stand for something and they've got a long history originating in the 1910s and 1920s. Lexus, which was created in 1989, has to be stupid to think it can compete with those brands.

Oh wait, they're well aware of that fact. It's their ignorant, stupid and BIASED fanboys like YOU that think Lexus, which started out as REBADGED TOYOTA'S, can compete with these ultra luxury brands.

There are a ton of factors that affect acceleration. The LS600h is considerably heavier than the LS430 and despite having a power advantage, the extra weight is possibly the factor that causes the LS600h to accelerate so slowly. I also think the CVT transmission could be at fault.

The funny thing is when back in 1989 I attended the North American Auto Show, Lexus unveiled their 1st Lexus LS400 for their new Luxury division, it drew a crowd but not so much a big crowd, and really did not see much of the Automotive Euro Corporate Boys around. But in the last 10 years, I have notice how the crowd has gotten bigger and bigger. And it's funny to see that those Automotive Euro Corp. boys were filling that "bigger-crowd". And to look over my shoulder and see their reation of "worry" after every unveil(but in a very gentlemen sort of way)...priceless. Everybody has their opinion on this board(an I get a lol-kick out of this post), and that's great. So do I, I love my Lexus, MB, Audi, and BMW. As I owned at least one model out of the 4 in the past and appreciate their levels of engineering/performance. But all have it's own level of being distinguish. As for Lexus they have created their own level of luxury, but a new kind of Luxury in this segment. Some of you guys may not admit this, but I have noticed a great deal of improvement over the the last 15 years with the Euro Luxury rides after Lexus has set the bar in terms of quality, reliablity, and price in the early 90s'. Rivals were forced to make a change, and a quick one I may add. Lexus has a long road ahead of them, it's true it will not be easy. Whatever way you look at it, they are going up, and never down, they are here to stay weather you like it or not. But one thing I have to say is I am dissappointed to the fact that Lexus has only been in the game for 18 years, as for the rest of the Euro Luxury Companies...well at least 80 plus years, so how did they allow a company like Lexus to become the successor in one of the biggest market(North America)? And by the way for you to say it's a glorified Toyota, that's fine, but that's like saying a Lada is better than an BMW X5, the bottom line we honestly know "it is not". If you have ever attended the head office of Toyota Japan & the Head office of Lexus Japan...totally 2 different worlds and actually got to know their whole process from the ground up, now that's priceless.

There are people who say that a V12 sports wagon will kill a V12 luxury sedan - of course it will, but if you compare cars then use the saem technique.

Lexus builds the best and furtune Hybrid motors, but they will never compete with sport brands like the M line by BMW or the AMG line by Mercedes or even the S line by Audi - as well as Porsche (but how could they, they specialise on a complete different customer).

Prestige and heritage my A$$........prestige and heritage only goes so far. Look at Lexus now it taking sales away from the S-class, 7 Series and the A8.

There is a newer generation of the young and rich who want to own a Lexus. There many famous movies star and singers who owned and drive a Lexus, and all of them can afford a Bentley, RR's and the Maybach but chose not to.

Okay after all the good comments i've said about Lexus while still clearly remaining a German fan then I must say this: the people who own Lexus may not neccesarily rich. While the wealthy tend to look towards a Mercedes for prestige, class, and heritage. The wealthy who want a more sporty feel would go for a BMW and the ones who want an understated level of luxury while maintaining a conservative look will go for an A8.

Lexus was only sold in the US and that is why it has become so successful. Don't forget it was a rebadged Toyota and has much help from Toyota to get to where they are. BMW and Mercedes never had a lower eco brand to push towards a luxury brand. Even Audi went through the rough times with Lexus did but has many years ontop of Lexus.

I don't think Lexus will ever top the world market as a luxury brand but may be respected in years to come. The new generations have showed great promise in the future of Lexus but I don't see Lexus taking out Europes prestige factor.

I've owned, driven, and ridden in all the luxury cars in the world but still I see Lexus comes short in the curb/status appeal. But for understated affordablility Lexus is the #1 winner. I feel that that's also why Lexus has become so popular in the US. People want bang for buck and Lexus has captured the market who may not necessarily want to fork out that much to buy an S600 but still able to drive a full size luxo sedan.

Despite all this bickering about the LS600H not being as prestigious as the Big III from Germany that's nonsense. I'm an all out German fan and always will be. However, I do think the LS 600 is a winner for Lexus. They have come a long ways in the past few years with the introduction of the latest GS, IS and now this LS.

I also think that Lexus understands the Prestige that the Germans have and they respect that. In result Lexus creates their own prestige. It's a different type. The LS is more affordable, more fuel efficient, and has Japanese luxury embedded all over it. Ever think that the Japanese never intended to make a car to take out the A8, 7, and S-class? Ever thought they just wanted to up the ante for their loyal LS customers?

Perhaps they know they can't beat the Germans in a world wide scale and just want to continue to capture the US market and some very niche markets in the world but still maintaining a high level of build quality like it's German counterparts.

I think we pay too much attention to who is better and not enough on the fact that 100K + cars have a lot of attention to detail. Sure Lexus is the newest brand out of the pack and sure they still have lots of proving to do to the world that they are just as good. I'm sure they still have many many years to go to do so. Whether they succeed or not we can't ignore the fact that no matter what car and what brand. ANY CAR that is priced at 100K or more is expected to have top notch amenities. Sure Mercedes have been the innovator in the auto world in the past and present and i'm sure they will continue to but Lexus has taken what Honda started into a whole different level. To the JDM it's a great achievement. In N.America it's also a great achievement because Lexus was created for the North American market. I feel that if Lexus continues to keep their original target consumers happy they will still be very successful as a company.

And our hearts are all split up between Lexus and the world because the ones who are fans of Lexus bought the marketing from Lexus and have realized that it's good products since after all Toyota's main target was North America to begin with.

I've owned many cars and I can say that any car 100K better be of top notch and they have been. I never expected any less from the cars i have owned. It's just for styling, history, and the European prestige I have gone for, it certainly does not mean I don't respect Lexus owners.

my 2 cents

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....
