Why is GM Still Banking On Gas Guzzlers to Save It?
A slumping pickup market is hindering General Motors Corp.'s turnaround effort in North America just as the automaker was gaining momentum.

GM was counting on its new full-size GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups to be smash hits, but the new trucks launched late last year are taking longer to sell than the outdated models they replaced, and they're leaving showrooms with just $420 less in incentives.

GM sold 200,505 of the trucks through the first three months of 2007, according to Edmunds.com, a figure one GM insider said fell well below internal projections.

Why the silverado SS?? Also, Toyota just bet big on the Tundra and it's not selling like it's supposed to, either. Obviously the whole market is slumped, not just GM. I'm just waiting for all the comments from people who read just the header and don't bother to read the article.

OMG.your so right!! Where is the love here? Toyota just spent BILLIONS to compete in the area and it's suddently still about GM? Does it even matter that GM has the most fuel efficient pick up trucks out there? Does it matter that GM is bringing the worlds first 2-mode hybrid SUVS? Does it matter that GM has committed to building the Volt? Or even debuting three micro cars when Toyota was pushing the Tundra? With the new CTS, Mailbu, STS, G8, I'd say that they are off of the truck focus

I live in Alberta where there is a strong demand for these types of vehicles due to the lifestyle and needs of its inhabitants. What would farmers and independent tradesmen do without these vehicles when they have all sorts of stuff to haul around. Thank you GM for continuing to improve the product!

the answer is simple Chevrolet pickups/SUVs are a solid reliable product in my family alone: 1996 Suburban LT 275k miles, 1988 Silverado 256k miles, 1993 Chevrolet Blazer Z71 361K miles and counting. These have been three of the most reliable vehicles we have ever owned. If sales are soft it could be because of lack of need for a new product. These trucks are built to last and are a testament to GM.
