I think IS350 low sales are a result of inventory. I was looking to get one recently, and there just aren't many out there! Each dealer in my area only have a handful on lot, and I would need to special order for the configuration I want. Plenty of IS250's though. I guess Lexus is really biasing output to the 250, and for those who really want a 350, would take what's available or wait a few months.

I can tell you that inventory on the IS350 is absolutely a factor of those numbers. Go to a local dealer and try to find one if you don't believe me (I'm not saying you won't, just ask to see how many they have).

Lexus entered the month with very low inventories of only 24 days vs an industry norm of around 50 days. So you are probably correct that some dealers didn't have any selection. Sometimes too lean is not good.

We have been sold out of IS350s' for 4 months. People have been forced to look to BMW/Infiniti/Acura. We lost countless sales due to lack of product.

I will post a fact vs fiction summary after all of the figures are in for the month, but do not forget the Japanese love to adjust sales vs selling days, while the Germans for instance do not.

So when comparing figures you will need to take that into account

For instance if Toyota sales were reported as VW and Audi do, Toyota would have had 6.3% DECLINE for the month (184,462 unit for 2007 vs 195,286 in 2006) and Lexus would have posted a more modest 5.33% INCREASE for the month (25,995 vs. 24,679).

Both ways of reporting are perfectly acceptable but significantly different when it comes to percentages.

1970toyotamarc1970toyotamarc - 5/1/2007 3:26:31 PM
+3 Boost
That's a really good point, but as it is overlooked on the months when it shows a lower gain than what really was sold, so it should be overlooked when it shows a higher percentage gain than the real sales. Sometimes ya just gotta look at raw numbers. (example, Lexus 25,995. BMW 25,310. Way too close for my comfort, but a victory nonetheless.)
The whole concept of selling days is ridiculous. There are enough markets where dealerships are open 7 days a week by now.

Well the year to date for 2006 and 2007 actually had 101 selling days so at this point everybody will be the reporting the same. I will probably get to this in the next day or so.

Lets get to the meat and potato of it all...Sales and numbers to me is not as important as the "NET PROFIT" and "CORE STRATEGY IN MARKETING".

Agent009, is justifying with crazy b.s. stories but I really don't see any point of this dispute about numbers. It boils down to LONG TERM STRATEGY by focusing its goals to making "CONNECTION" with consumers of "EVERY DIFFERENT TASTE IN CARS" by building "WHAT EACH AND EVERYONE WANTS AND AS EQUALLY IMPORTANT NEEDS". Toyota and Honda has excelled at this, period. I don't give rats ass about % or any fancy equation to justify who is better..Japanese or Germans. Both Lexus and BMW has survived due to their ability to define what we mostly want and are willing to pay for it year after year...in a sense German car fans and Japanese car fans are exactly the same type...WE are just sensilessly bias to each other for the sake of being an ignorant bunch of fools, except me.
Go have a coke and a smile and relax..and don't be a moran like Agent009.

Well NiceHomer (where did you get that name BTW…LOL). The figures you have issues with are not mine. There is no BS from us we simply are posting what the manufacturer list in their press releases. So any spin that is there is from them not us. We do not alter the wording in these releases. So if there is a beef with a figure blame them.

You are correct that profit and long term strategy are the most critical aspects for any manufacturer.

You can easily see the results say in Infiniti's case, where the short term turnaround was the primary goal, and they achieved a monumental turnaround back from the brink of bankruptcy. Only to falter because there was no long term goal for new models. They basically rested on their laurels and let the whole lineup get stale.

Toyota and Lexus in this regard do a significantly better job of it no question.

But on the other hand you have to have sales increases to deemed as successful by many. If the market size is increasing and your sales don't increase, you are actually falling behind. Look at Audi as a prime example; plugging along in one of the worlds most significant markets and not moving forward with sales gains. Totally unacceptable in my opinion. So basically all I am saying is that success is judged on many levels, it could be profit levels, volume, and even exclusiveness, it is all in the eye on the beholder.

So the Tundra continues to gain solid momentum, not yet on pace for 200K a year, but getting closer. It wont take long for it to surpass Ram sales. But this was not a great month for Toy/Lex. Good, but not great. LS selling unbelievably well. Hybrids continue to shine. But there are some glaring holes. They need to do something about the Avalon. It consistently trails its competitors. Lexus trucks are sinking, the new LX570 will only be able to do so much. There's at least another year of the RX, and who knows how long for the antiquated GX. And, month after month, I cant figure out why the GS doesnt move more units. I see a lot of them in LA. At least it still beats the Infiniti M and Audi A6.

Well, thats my 2 cents on my beloved Toyota.
