what is up with the articles on here? everyone knows that this is not the case in regards to the SMG M5. Fastest 0 to 60 4.1 seconds and quarter mile 12.27 by Car & Driver and Road & track magazines. I have driven the E63 and compared to the M5 they are 2 different animals. The M5 is much more sporty in regards to raw feel and handling prowess... The Mercedes on the other hand is more luxurious and much more sedate drive with it.

No lexus no. I'm a lexus fan too, but we have to be honest. The IS-F cannot be compared to either the E63 or M5, the later ones have much bigger engines with turbos/super charges that produce over 500hps. So there is no way.
The IS-F should be compared only against its competirors, the M3, S4 and alike.

So the E63 will definity win over the IS-F, simply it has a much more power.

eh, different strokes for different folks. I love the E63 AMG, great power, perfectly comfortable, gorgeous interior, classy exterior. I also love the M5, incredible high revving V10, lightning quick shifts, still plenty comfortable and ridiculously athletic, and I like the looks (I know not everyone does). Interior was the only weak point to me, but the 2008's are much nicer.

Both excellent, I'd take either and smile.

the new M5 felt to me like a four door Porsche when I drove it, the AMG felt to me like what it is -- a massively powerful and comfortable luxury car. They're both fantastic, and I don't think a 0.1 second difference in 0-60 or quarter mile time are going to sell one over the other. Different sources have gotten different times, most magazines have gotten 0-60 in 4.1 seconds for the SMG M5 and the 1/4 in 12.4. That's plenty fast, every bit as quick as the E63 is, and right on par with any 911 whose model doesn't end in "Turbo", "GT1", or "GT2".

it really isn't fair to say the E63 eats the M5 for breakfast. They are 2 different kinds of cars. Apples and Oranges. Mercedes stresses a plusher ride, a luxurious cockpit, more emphasis on straight line acceleration(accomplished with high displacement engines), and high torque. The M5 on the other hand, stresses cornering peformance, a driver oriented cockpit, a high tech smaller displacement engine with higher redline RPM with less emphasis on torque.

And how did the IS-F get in these comments? The IS-F will be compared to the BMW M3 and upcoming C63 AMG. No one can really make judgment about the IS-F yet since the car is at least a half year away.

those E63s are pretty damn quick... ya the m5 handles well and feels like a monster but on the highway(the real world of driving) the E63 will eat it for breakfast , lunch, dinner and dessert ...

I'm pretty sure the 0-150mph time of the E63 is the same as the manual transmission M5, and that's the slower version of the M5. I don't think the E63 would eat the M5 on the highway period, let alone eating it "for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert"

That's assuming the person driving the M5 knows how to shift a manual... and, sadly enough, many M5 drivers are posers. It's not the car's fault- it happens to many. Today, I was going down Lake Cook (a street that goes from two lanes to one) in the S4, and there was a 997 Carrera coupe behind me. It seemed as if the guy driving wanted to play, so I sped up, revved the engine a bit. He didn't do anything. I left him in the dust during the lane change. That poor 911! I want a C4S Cabriolet, so I can show people how to actually drive one.

I'd pick the E63 on looks alone.

I'd take the Merc, but I wish people would stop bitching about the 5's SMG. It ain't that bad.

The E63 was an option when I went to go look at an S550. The only reason why I didn't get it was because I needed the extra room but the performance numbers were awesome with this E63. It combines aggressive performance with the finest quality in terms of fine finishing. It combines the best of both worlds. Sport/Luxury (more luxury of course) where as the M5 is more sport-luxury. I would take the E63 over an M5 any day. The rumble from a Mercedes V8 engine is like no other. If you have ever driven one you would know what I'm talking about.

Agent63, why would you need the extra room of the S-Class if you also have an LS460? I would've gone with the AMG... and what you say, of late, seems a bit peculiar. I can't trust anyone on this site! Who would have both an LS460 and an S550?! That's like me buying my wife an A8, and then getting an S8 two years later. Odd.

For the money, the M5 gives you so much more. This is over 10 grand more than the M5.

I question their 0-60 times on the M5. I've heard as low as 4.1 seconds, which arguably puts the M5 as the same or faster than this, and there is no argument even from this author that the quater mile times are faster with the M5.

The M5 makes the same horsepower with less than 1.2 liters less displacement, and revvs to 8.5 grand. This low-tech mercedes engine give up at 7,000 revs.

And last, if not least, this thing has a frigging slushbox tranny.

Good poitns all.. But how many buyers actually care about the revs and lack of manual tranny ...
I mean, most of they guys are rich yuppie geezers (think fake tan and penny loafers) impressing their 2nd /3rd wifes or Gf's as they zoom from stoplight to stoplight.
That any of these will ever see a race track or ebven use more then 10 % of their power , I seriously doubt..

Edmunds isn't a very reliable source, they lost all credibility with me after they said the LS outhandles the 7-series, & now they're saying a E63 is faster than an M5.

Personally though I would take the E63 because it's the better all around car & worlds classier than the M5.

In most cases I'll over look the styling of a certain car if it drives better than the competition, but the 5 has never pleased my eyes & I've always loved the E-class.

I drove the M5 on a track & loved the SMG for what I was doing, but I could clearly see & understand why it's not the best gearbox for commuting around town.

For an absolute powerful luxury sedan I would take E63 but for the driving thrill definitely the M5. I'm a Benz kind of guy therefore I wouldn't need that racer feel in my car but I don't want a turtle car either.

The E63 suits it well. If I really wanted a full size uber luxury sedan the S65 would be a great choice. However ont many would spend that $ on a Benz. Easily someone who can afford an S65 can go upmarket into a Bentley Continental that's just based on people I have met and people I know.

Actually, the Flying Spur is pretty much exactly the same price as the S65... you're not really going "upmarket" there, as they offer similar luxury, with the S beating the Bentley in outright speed and exclusivity.

The E63 is sweet! Duh, my favorite E.

BMW will sell more more M5's than MB will sell these.

And, the resale value of a 2007 M5 will shrink half as fast as this car.

I picked my '06 M5 for a reason. I prefer the looks of the 5 over the E simply because I love aggressive looking cars. I also care about handling although I never used the M5's full potential. Mine is an SMG, which is, for most of you people that dont know, a manual tranny without a clutch. I know its that comfortable in daily driving, but I have another car to do that job. The high revving V10 is absolutly amazing! The interior does the job perfectly of giving a sporty luxury image. I love it.

I'm glad. Both are beautiful sedans, the M5 being the pinnacle of what a performance sedan is- minus the great manual tranny. The E63 AMG appeals a bit more to me, though, because I love its raw speed as well as its traditionally beautiful style. Some would say it's more feminine than the M5, because it's a Mercedes, but I just think it would look better against my new house.

I just compared MSRP to average selling prices of 2006 E55s and 2006 M5's. 2006 E55s MSRP is nearly identical to the 2006 M5, right at 82,500, before options.

The average national used car selling price right now on the E55 is $72,200, the average selling price on the M5 is $79,100.

The BMW, apparantly keeps it's value better than the Benz.

No surprise to me.

I sold my 2003 M5 for only 6,000 less for what I paid for it after putting 28k miles on it (not including luxory and gas guzzler taxes).

We are talking about 2 specific cars here, why is there always people gettin ohter cars in the discusions which r not part of it?

Difference is in reliability. An E63 can't run with an M5 as the miles pile on. Merc. durability is crap. Great cars as long as you're not the one stranded on the side of the road.

In the category of HP per liter, BMW wins.

Who cares, look at the front end of a Mercedes, what was Mercedes thinking. Teardrop asain headlights. Side by side the front ends of the M5 e60 next to the E63 Mercedes. Whos eating who for lunch. My grandma drives a Mercedes. Drive around some day and just see how many old codgers are driving the Mercedes. Get one if you want an old mans car, otherwise go BMW (be my women).
