Autombile Magazine Test Drives The 2008 Volkswagen R32

Autombile Magazine Test Drives The 2008 Volkswagen R32
This past weekend, I stopped by Willow Springs raceway to see what over a hundred Volkswagen R32s would look like. They look, well, like over a hundred R32s.

But the sound. Oh, the sound. See, normally when you pull up to the paddock of a hot racetrack, your ears are assaulted with the maniacal roar of pissed-off engines. Some sound fantastic (ever hear a Ferrari at full bore?) and some sound painful (ever hear a Ford Duratec at full bore?)

But when every car on the track is a mellifluous R32, there is no painful. There is no assault, there is no roar. Each car continually sends your ears a gift basket containing a warm, burbly, Pavarotti-gurgling-with-wine aria that is so unmistakably, magically, VR6.

LexusNumberOne,

What does Lexus have to compete with this? This is a hot hatch and Lexus has no hot hatch and nothing even close to this. You call it a loser but the closest thing Toyota has is a Yaris? what can that do?

Agent63,

Why ask about Lexus just to try and bash them? Because some fake user has it in his username?

I can bash any car I want even Mercedes. I own a Merc S550 and a Lexus LS so I say I'm fairly neutral.

IS/GS looks great to me. The LS is where it ends for me in full size uber sedans as the S550 does the job for me. I bought an LS because it drove the way I expected it to and it's my daily driver. It lets me get through traffic with less stares than the Merc gets me and I want that. When I go to my club gatherings perhaps the Merc would get the call up to do the job. Then again sometimes I just close my eyes and pick a key and go because at least I'm guaranteed a nice luxurious ride so it's a win win situation.

-------

Anyways there are too many fake users on this website all talking about Lexus as if they are the greatest in the world. The German fans don't think their brands are so I don't see why the Lexus looney tunes should even bother.

VWs are just sitting on lots, if your interested in anything by them the time to buy is now!! supercheap deals. And the Hyundai Azera is actually a better built car (nice V6)than the new Buick Lucerne, go check one out I shit you not. And VW will be dammed to hell if they dont bring the Scirocco over. The new R32 will be a bomb, going up against the IS 250, which they will fail.

The R32 doesnt even remotely compare to the IS250, completely different car.

General Note:
Just because there are several douchebags on this website that talk shit and think Lexus is the God of all car companies does not mean you should sh*t on Lexus. Stop saying they are overpriced carollas.

For the Record, these are the Lexus's that are redesigned Toyotas:

ES = Camry
RX = Highlander
GX = Peijeo (JDM luxury 4Runner)
LX = Land Cruiser

ON TOPIC
R32 was awesome last Gen IMO, only because I like that styling better. If the Mazdaspeed3 had AWD that would be an awesome face off!

I still want an EVO though!

I can tell you one thing the seats in that R32 are better than any thing in a GS, IS, or ES!

Its a great car. Needs to go on a diet though...

Maybe a good car, but too expensive. Evo X will eat it for lunch.

Not to mention the Subie Sti . or even the stock WRX ( for its potential to be modded . aka Vishnu stahge 1-3)
Nver quite understood what the R32 was for...

And it wasn't made for that. You think VW wanted an EVO eater? They would've built one!

BTW, this would beat a WRX. Maybe not a chipped one, but a stock one. And you could also easily chip a GTI, if you want to play that game.

Hmm never realized that "Grownups" liked overpriced . porky little adoloscent hatchbacks that are underpowered and over badged.

In that case i shall stick to my "Adult" / "Mature" choice of the Evo X ... or maybe the Subie Sti... hmmmm

These are a lot of fun to drive. A friend of mine had one for a while, really scoots, and very fun.

R32s will fly off the lot!
There was a HUGE demand for the old one once it was no longer available!
Resale on these is quite good.
Love the R32; sure the Evo and the Sti will beat it, but people buying the R32 are buying it because THAT is what they wanted!!

I agree. Just like STI/WRXs and Evos have their fans, the R32 has theirs. IMO the R32 is a more refined and understated pocket rocket.

(From one who has driven one for a while)

The VW R32 is Pefect for people who wish to have a small rapid vehicle and have all the Luxury that most larger vehicles provide to their owners.

*Exceptional Interior & Exterior Quality and Ergonomics
*Very Quiet Cabin at Cruise with Nice Bellow from Exhausts over 4000rpm
* Does not Look and Feel Cheap like the Mitsu & Subaru does (You can actually drive to work everyday in the R32 and many do in the UK)

Granted the Lancia Evo and STI will beat the R32 in a race but the R32 is something you can VERY COMFORTABLY use everyday and it will give you 90% of the thrills the Evo & STI can deliver and 100 times better Practicality.

DSG box is a joy and the 5-Door R32 is in Greater Demand. (Not sure why)

Not to mention it looks 100,000X better... the EVO and STi LOOK cheap. If that's what it takes to make an affordable performance sedan, I don't want one. The GTI and R32 are awesome, and yes, I love the DSG in my A3.
