2007 Lexus LS460L Review

The Bottom Line - The car that parks itself is a trivial part of the definition of this excellent luxury car. There is enormous legroom front and back, plus more than adequate power from a smooth-running V8. If youre saving your money for a luxury car, this is the one youve been waiting for.
From the day it first hit the highways, the Lexus LS flagship sedan has been the benchmark fro quality and quiet. It excels in comfort and luxury, while transporting its passengers in near silence over all road surfaces.

The new Lexus LS460L (for long wheelbase) is about as close to perfection as you can find in a car that reasonably priced. Yeah, I know, $81,000 isnt reasonable for many of us, but its a lot less than youd spend for a Rolls-Royce or Maybach.

The longer wheelbase adds 4.8 inches over the standard LS at least that much in rear seat legroom (and about $10,000 to the bottom line). Those rear seats are heated (as are the fronts) and can offer almost-reclining comfort.


Despite the added interior room, there is no compromise on trunk space. The trunk, listed at 18.0 cubic feet, is enormous and is a four-bagger for golfers. This means you can take your foursome (theyll argue over who sits in back for a change) and their bags to the local course. The trunk also offered power lift and shut, a great convenience.

The 4.6-liter V8 engine is also new in the redesigned LS series that shares a lot of the body sculpting with the Camry. This isnt a bad thing as far as Im concerned. The old LS, to me, was kind of bland and almost boring, while the more sculpted `07 version has more character.

The engine offers 380 horsepower, which is more than enough to propel the LS into illegal speed territory quickly. Cruise control (standard Toyota issue behind the wheel in the lower right quadrant) is an economic necessity. The LS is so smooth and quiet that youll find yourself speeding without realizing it.

Without cruise, youll pay close attention to the instruments, which arent as electronic game-styled as in before, but still are clear and crisp.

Now this statement can't be ignored.

Reviewers definitely want to convey something, and we all know what they mean.

LS is really made up to the standards of RR and Phantom and not MB or BMW.

That's what I've been saying. It says something that reviewers keep comparing the LS to Maybach and Rolls Royce. Of course those two have more "prestige" and their customers don't care about price, but we're not talking about those aspects. We're talking about the level of luxury and comfort that the LS provides. They clearly did a damn good job to have nearly every review done on the thing compare the LS's level of luxury to Maybach and Rolls.

The Maybach sells few because it's intentions were never to sell as much as Bentley. It's very exclusive.

As for the LS being compared to RR and Bentley that is fine. However people who are in the market to an RR or Bentley wouldn't even consider an LS to begin with. They are totally different markets. The rear design is very Maybach-ish and not even the Lexus fan can deny that.

It's compared in regards to it's features not neccesarily the quality and level of luxury. It's level of luxury is not ultra luxury. It's no better than the S, 7 or A8. The feeling, the smell, the prestige, the price, & passion the ultra luxury market has can't be compared to by the Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and certainly not Lexus. Sure quality is high and the LS does very well and is a much improvement for the Lexus brand.

I feel this car has a lot of hype and we'll see how it does in years to come. I love my LS and how it drives but for true European luxury my S550 more than the LS. The LS caters to another market. People who can't afford the difference for an S-Class could easily afford an LS460 and that's great! because it can cater to people who have a tighter budget.

All in all 100K market consists of great cars. We argue and flame war all we want but you know deep inside anyone who owns cars in this segment should be very happy with their product.

1. It's about two feet shorter

2. The interior looks ultra-cheap in comparison

3. It has 170 less horsepower

4. There's no comparison in terms of ride quality

5. Curbside appeal? Lexus has never heard of it

6. Anyone can get a cheap lease on an LS460, with a good trade-in

7. The Rolls is a Rolls

8. There's only a $280,000 difference in price

stop ... enough already. Does anyone on this site know what the makes a ROLLS a ROLLS? You frickin idiot lexus fans. Have any of you actually driven the Lexus? I have .. It is a nice car, but doesnt do anything that special. It is not as quick or handle as well as the BMW 7-series. The interior isnt as nice as the S-class or the Audi or the Jaguar for that matter. Overall though it is a nice car. It is not a Rolls or Bentley competitor. That is like saying that the Commodore 64 comp from 10 years ago is the equivalent to the IBM. huh? Does the Lexus actually have a person hand stitch the leather in the seats or is it done on an assembly line? Does Lexus have the wood specifically picked out for the individual car, knowing that the wood on that car is different from any other Rolls? I didnt think so ... Does Lexus allow you the opportunity to visit the plant and pick out each individual option? NO. When you see a Lexus do you sit there and stare in awe of the presence and the look of the car? Chances are you barely recongnize it driving down the road. When someone see a Rolls, i bet that they tell everyone around " did you see that Rolls over there? " whereas they dont look twice at the Leuxs. It is all about the Status, pedigree, ego and the " magic feel" of owning something that takes your breath away. Knowing that your car is unique and all your own. That only a few are lucky enough to have one. Kind of like having a " Black American Express card" vs someone with a platinum card. The difference is " you are the man " vs " trying to be the man " ... LS460 is a very nice car, but dont ever compare it to a ROLLS. That is insulting to any car enthusiast out there. Since we are on it why dont we compare a Ford Mustang to a 1969 Shelby Cobra ... that is how ridiculous the Lexus fans on here are ......... lmao

As I've mentioned earlier, LS comparisons to ROLLS are about its level of luxury, not all the other aspects such as prestige and price. The LS's level of luxury and comfort is extremely high, considering nearly every review of the car even mentions ROLLS.

All woodgrain pieces in Lexus automobiles are cut from the same tree; all sanded and finished at the same time. This is the same kind of attention to detail that ROLLS and BENTLEY hyped themselves up over.

I have noticed that the major car magazines: Motor Trend, Car and Driver and Road Test don’t get figures as low as Lexus gets.

With that said I went to the sites of these cars below and got the manufacturers specifications and they are:

BMW 750Li 5.8 seconds 0 – 60 Car and Driver 5.7
Lexus LS460L 5.4 seconds 0 – 60 Car and Driver 6.2
MBZ S550 5.4 seconds 0 – 60 Car and Driver 5.6

I also checked out the horse power rating of the LS430 and found that The 2004 LS430 was re-horse powered at 278 by Lexus in early 2006. And all LS430’s have 278 hp or 5.7% less than originally advertised.

When Mazda had the same problem it made a buyback offer to purchasers of 2001 Miata two-seaters because those produced 142 hp instead of the 155 hp, or 8.3% less, then Masda advertised. Mazda also had an hp discrepancy with the RX-8 and offered a buy back on those too.

I find it troubling that Lexus didn’t offer something to offset the incorrect hp.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....

You know I saw these figures on here and thought they looked rather odd at first, but failed to mention anything.

BMW 750Li [Not 750iL] manufacturer 0-60 time is 5.8 seconds. Listed above is 5.7: so basically the same depending on conditions. Mercedes S550 manufacturer 0-60 time 5.4 seconds, here is listed 5.6 seconds. Audi figures do support 5.9 seconds. Lexus figures have been addressed.

There is a large disconnect however with the Jaguar figures. I don’t say this to blindly defend Jaguar but the figure actually makes little sense. I am assuming that Jaguar XJ Super means Super V8.

According to Jaguar the 0-60 time for the Super V8 is 5.0 seconds not 6.0 seconds. 6.0 seconds is closer to the normal XJ 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds.

Ah looking at the article; “We say purported because our car felt down on output, and this is reflected in our six-second 60-mph-sprint result. Jaguar claims five seconds, which seems more likely.”

I wonder if there was something wrong with their test car.

bevisroy, the reason why the hp rating was lower than it was orginally claim is because the have use a different method of hp measurement.

bevisroy, do you work for BMW, MB or Audi or something? stick to the dawn subject. The Lexus LS460/LS600hl level of luxury is equal to the like of RR's, Bentley And Maybach. If you want to talk about overpricing, than I can just says the same about the Maybach isn't it "Just an Overprice MB" ;) get the point?
