GLK or MLK: Mercedes’ compact SUV coming to Geneva next year

Well we’re not sure if Mercedes will call their new compact SUV the GLK or the MLK, but we do know that Mercedes will unveil the car at the next Geneva Motor Show in March. Whatever they decide call it, the compact Mercedes SUV will be based on the platform of the 2008 C-Class (much like the X3 is based on the 3-Series) and will be powered by a 2.0 liter standard all-wheel drive and will eventually have a 2.2-liter turbodiesel that produces 204 horsepower the following year.

I'd take the diesel version but it will arrive too late for me anyway. Also, I am not happy about the silly design of the rear quarter which looks just as bad as the rear quarter on the R-class. No wonder my wife wants the upcoming 2008 VUE.

It's horrible but people will buy it because of it's name. I see the horrible X3 around but people still own one because of the BMW badge.

In today's society name is everything and in their views name is quality therefore it's sitting in their garage. In the higher models it may be the case but in these low range BMW/Mercedes/Audi/Lexus it may not always be the case. We shall wait and see.

This isn't what it's going to look like! This looks like a photoshopped last-gen ML. It will be sharper and a bit boxier, less van-ish, more like a mini-GL. I'm sure it will have a classy, stately design, and will grow on me over time... just like the GL. I thought the big Benz SUV was boring at first, but now it's one of my favorites. Especially with the appearance package.
