Porsche working on a Porsche-Golf for 2012?

As weird as this may sound, it seems Porsche is working on a Porsche badged Volkswagen Golf for 2012. Now, we know that the Volkswagen Golf is a huge success, but a Porsche version of the car seems like a totally absurd idea; unless of course Porsche is postioning itself to become more mainstream and compete with BMW.

The picture above is on the cover of the new AutoBild magazine. The caption next to it read (in German) ”kompakte geheim-projekte bis 2012. der porsche-golf.” That translates to “compact secret projects until 2012. the Porsche-Golf.”

Last week, Porsche officially submitted an offer to acquire shares of Volkswagen, which will give it total control of Germany’s largest auto maker. If the bid goes through, it’s obvious Porsche and Volkswagen will share even a larger number of their platforms, but a Porsche-Golf will definitely take away the factor that sets Porsche apart from other German luxury auto makers.

A Golf-based Porsche might be a good idea; just depends on the final product.

Porsche just needs to keep their least expensive model still priced above $40K and avoid things like a third row seat in a Cayenne. They'll be fine.

The Cayenne was a mistake in the first place. This one, if built, is going to complete derailing Porsche from it's throne. I'm saddened with their latest decisions, including the Panamera.

They could be the ones making the Scirroco! AWD, Boxster S engine....yes, this would be good. They could still have the VW version but just not give it the stuff the Porsche has.
I'm guessing this would be around 30K GBP, which is only a little less than a Boxster.

The A3 2.0TDI fully specced is OVER 30k GBP
So im sure the 3.2 Quattro or S3 with options is over 30K GBP

Way i see it, Porsche if they are planning to do this, are only going to release a very limited no of examples to keep demand high. its not suppossed to be a large volume seller (Remember the RS2?)

I wonder what Porsche marketing guys have up their sleeve to ensure customers' friends won't laugh at them for spending much extra money just to get the Porsche brand instead of the VW brand on their vehicle.

Instead of a golf based Porsche, why not come out with a reincarnation of the 944, I think that would be more in line with the brand and its automobiles.

Their Sports/Super Car purity was already diluted by the Cayenne and upcoming Panamera.This can happen. Anything can happen.

Maybe even a Porsche Truck in the future to rival Ford F-150.

First of all the Cayenne was the smartest thing that Porsche ever did. If Porsche was to remain independent that had no choice but to branch out into new markets. If they did not do this then they would have had a great deal of trouble surviving the ups and downs of the market. See the problem is that Porsche's market is one rung below Aston Martin,Ferrari,even Maserati.They are competing with BMW,Jaguar,Mercedes,Audi in the $40,000 to $100,000 market. You cannot be a small volume limited production type of company in that market. Your profits depend on volume. The Cayenne was the excact vehicle Porsche needed to grow. Sales of the Cayenne help fund the Panamera,which allows Porsche to continue to develope the Boxster/Cayman and 911 in its umpteen different versions.By taking over VW Porsche is showing that it wants to compete with Mercedes,Audi, and BMW with high volume.So the Porsche/Golf VW is a high volume attempt.

As much as I dislike the Cayenne, it still was a good, profitable decision to sell it. Panamera looks awesome, as does the planned 928 replacement. What do you want from Porsche - 2 cars? You think this car is a mistake? How about the 924 and the 914?
