Next generation Range Rover: Greener, lighter and sharper
The next generation Range Rover won’t be out on the market until 2012, but Land Rover is putting the finishing touches on what is reported to be the new look for the next-generation Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Freelander and Defender, plus possible additional new models.

But the key feature for the next generation Ranger Rover isn’t so much the sharper design; it’s the aluminum bodyshell that will reduce weight by 40 percent (between 300kg and 400kg). Sources have told AutoCar that they are just waiting for approval from top management at Ford and expect the green light within the next few months.

Power will come from a two versions of a 5.0 liter V8 direct injection engine producing around 350 horsepower and 460 horsepower. A hybrid powertrain is also in the works to make this the ultimate low CO2 emissions SUV.

Of course all these new features come at a price. With sharper design, lighter body weight, new engines and a possible hybrid variant, the new Range Rover will have a price of around £100,000.

expensive though, but I reckon that will be for an absolute top of the range Vogue SE high performance one.
Will the hybrid be the range topper or not? It would be interesting if they made it the mid range model.

Why? The LR2 is their best-seller. It was their breakout model- it practically defines the class.

Oh, darnit! I always get the LR2 and LR3 confused! When I think of the LR2, I think of the midsized truck- because, to me, the "2" means it's older and therefore has a lower nomenclature. Yes, they can get rid of the LR2, just not the LR3.

Weight Savings would be very good, Keeping Fingers Crossed that all the cost cutting measures used in the making of the Jag XK are not used in the New RR. I can guarantee if the final product is Shite, UK and European Buyers will go elsewhere. Cayenne & Q7 are good Competitors in this segment and I think new LX will be avail in Europe so Ford needs to be real careful on this one.

2012 makes sense, I expected a 10 year reign of the current model (if it cant last 10 years it shouldnt have the reputation it does).

Here's an interesting note:

I read in automobile mag a month ago that the future Land Rover lineup will look much different...changes as follows:

Range Rover
Redesign as outlined above will take it above $100k (USD) in an attempt to make it in a class of its own (as many argue it already is, and, whether you like it or not, the LX470 is the only that comes close becuase it offers extreme luxury and off-road capability that is respected world-wide)

Range Rover Coupe
Yeah...not much detail here..but it's suppose to be under the range rover...I'd consider it "to the Range Rover as the Benz CLS is to the S Class"...if you get my drift

Range Rover Sport

Ah! the big news! This will actually be the next-gen LR3, which Land Rover plans on dubbing Range Rover Country, to move it further upmarket, KEEP IN MIND that they will still use the Land Rover name as an 'umbrella'.

LR2
According to the article I read this will be dropped form the lineup because they dont want such a low entry level vehicle (in the same respect that many believe the x-type hurts the image of Jaguar) Although this will be a good volume seller, and may have staying power if it doesnt turn into a disaster like the freelander.

Reliability will be key, I would buy a Range in a heartbeat if their repairs didnt drain my pockets....

*When I referenced the LX as "respected worldwide", this is in reference to the LAND CRUISER, which is the vehicle of choice for the U.N. and is well respected in markets all over the world...essentially the same vehicle, with more "prestiege" as an LX for the U.S. market.

Yes, I read that myself. I don't remember it being over $100K- that's uncharted territory for an SUV, at least one that's not as ridiculous as the Hummer H1 and Lamborghini LMP0292999A thing. If they can lower the weight and make it even better-looking (if that's possible), I might have to drop having a sporty car altogether. Or at least drop my wife's car for it.

I have a Range Rover Sport Supercharged, and it really is an excellent car...Alot of people complained abour reliability, but non yet..It is gorgeous, powefull, good offroad with an amazing interior..Two issues, wight and fuel..Other than that, it could possibly be the ultimate SUV..

LOOOOL why dont RR just shoot themselves, its much quicker that way


The new aluminum bodyshell will be more expensive thats for sure but i thing i lighter body will give chance to a smaller engine which is cheaper (while still having good power of cource) so the costs might cancel out at the end.
