First Drive: 2008 Cadillac STS V-6

Cadillac’s mid-cycle refresh of the STS doesn’t include a 16-cylinder engine, but it gets a much-improved V-6, anyway.

When we first reported on Cadillac’s refreshed 2008 STS from the New York auto show, we quoted the new base engine—a 3.6-liter DOHC direct-injection V-6—at 298 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. Since then, four more of each have been found, bringing the totals to 302 and 272, respectively.

That’s just 18 fewer ponies than the optional 4.6-liter Northstar V-8, while the V-6 model will likely cost some $9000 less. Nine grand for 18 horsepower!? That rivals some of the deals you’ll find on Shelby Mustangs.

More power, more refinement, more mpg, more gears.

Sadly, the STS is irrelevant. As Jon21 mentioned, why buy the STS when the new CTS will be out shortly? They're close in size. The facelifted version of the STS looks like it has a bunch of J.C. Whitney add-ons.

And this brings me to my next point.......GM, stop smokin crack. Who and the heckuvit buys a V6 STS??? I guess it's like buying a 525 BMW.(Hey and that 525 sold pretty darn well!!)

GM should really rethink the STS..it is about the same size as the CTS and a lot more expensive.

The only reason somebody might buy an STS versus over a CTS is if they don't want to drive the car 'Paulie Walnuts' in the Sopranos drove to wreck 'Chris-tu-fer' Moltisanti's front lawn. Anybody see that episode on Sunday pretty cool..but I digress..

In all seriousness, Cadillac should re-introduce the STS on the China-market long wheelbase platform of the SLS and upgrade the interior. There is zero rear leg room in both the CTS and the STS..at least the CTS is $10k cheaper.
