Audi Q7 4.2 TDI Review

When you’ve spent a gazillion Euros developing the world’s most powerful V8 diesel engine it would seem economic suicide not to use it in as many models as possible. This, and the fact sales of the Q7 have far exceeded Audi’s wildest forecasts, makes the two appear a perfect match. Taking into consideration the phenomenal success the Q7 has had (88,000 units to date worldwide since launch thirteen months ago) during a trend of unfounded villification against all SUVs, it make you wonder what Audi know that all the other car manufacturers don’t.
This 4.2-litre V8 diesel is the most compelling powerplant currently available in the line-up. And given the choice, wouldn’t you want your two tonne off-roader to swagger around with 326bhp, and a massive 560lb ft of torque, enough turbo-blown muscle to bolt to 60mph in a smidgen over six seconds and post a 146mph top speed, all while returning 21 US MPG combined? Exactly. And it’s quieter than a slipper-shod church mouse tiptoeing across a shag pile carpet. Add the intuitive six-speed automatic gearbox and Quattro 4WD system into the equation, and you end up with a flagship SUV, fuelled from the black handled pump, which truly believes it is a petrol driven sports coupe.

Yeah, looks great. But will they sell it over here?
I'm in NYC and the AllRoad seems to be the official car of Manhattan.
There's talk of the V-12 TDI for the US, which is OK, but an engine that large will still suck fuel like a gas engine.

I think this is much more practical, but I don't expect we'll see it. Just like the Touareg, that comes with a fantastic 5-cyl. diesel in Europe, we only get 2 of those engines (V-10) here.

Personally, I want an A6 with the V8 TDI. That would be awesome!

A8L 4.2TDI for me, please. The ultimate exec express- and it still gets 30mpg.

Apparently, the Q7 3.0TDI is just as strong as the 4.2 petrol, but easier on fuel, of course.

We will get the V6 TDI Q7 next year. There is actually not that much of a difference in fuel economy between the V6 and V12 TDIs. Especially between V8 and V12, that difference is almost invisible.

I might be interested. The only other car that I might consider is the X5, but IMO the Q7 0wns the X5 in so many way. Make it a V12 TDI and I'm done!

Pure overkill. A simple 3.0 TDI is more than sufficient to move this car around in an efficient and sporty manor.

The 4.2 TDI is not even that economical in such an overweight SUV.

Yes it is a success. One car sold 88000? For a premium model, I'd say that's pretty good.

Audi sells what, 800000-900000 cars per year? For one model, one EXPENSIVE model, not a cheap one, to sell 10% of total sales, is frankly amazing.

Information:
1) Diesel is the same price as petrol in Middle East (The major oil producers) and in some places even more than Petrol.

2) Diesel Passenger car's sales accounts for less than 10% in Middle East.

BTW this new Audi 4.2 V8 Diesel looks really good. Wow nearly the same BHP as petrol unit and way more torque and mpg.
