A Look At The New LED Headlights On The Lexus LS600h
After the enormous interest in our previous story on the new LED headlights in the Audi R8, we’ve decided to give you the latest updates to the LED system Lexus plans to introduce in the flagship LS 600h. Unlike the all-LED system that Audi will debut on its R8 sports car at the end of the year, the Lexus units only use the efficient diodes for its low-beam projectors. The LS 600h will also be the first application of a hybrid powertrain with an eight-speed gearbox.

Lexus will still offer conventional halogen lamps or optional xenon units but the advantage of LEDs is as clear as night and day. The average life span of LEDs is approximately 15 years without any reduction in the light beam’s intensity or color. They are also very reliable, maintenance free, and the light response time is very quick, taking just 0.1 of second to reach full intensity.

Take it how you will, but we just received a 2006 Bentley Flying Spur as a trade for a 2007 LS460l.

Ironman...how did you give the Bentley tradee his/her change? Or do Flying Phaetons (sorry Flying Spurs) depreciate so fast that its an even trade?

Well, how would you think. They got a check back for the difference. o.O

Looks cool. LS600h uses dual stage e-CVT, not 8 sp.

R8 what? Let's settle it down once for all:

The Lexus LS600h LED headlights are the word's first.

So i'm not crazy... I thought it had a cvt too rather than an 8 speed.

SupraNeverBack,

Different ways of spinning information:
- LS600h: First LED Headlights (low beams ONLY)
- R8: First all LED lights (highs, lows, rears, turns)

Will someone please explain to me how a factual comment gets modded down? I seriously question this whole system.

jeffy210, it's because you actually said something that made Lexus look bad. To them, that's impossible, and your quote should be eliminated. That's how I see it.

The city I live in, Raleigh, NC just wrote into law that they will switch all city lights to LED and other more efficient lighting sources to save energy. Maybe if(when) I get this car I can get tax cuts? lol.

LexusAdmirer,

Must I remind you that Audi has more HISTORY than Lexus? Audi has more famous cars than Lexus too as well as more branch cache globally. Actually it would be, Audi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lexus...

Bill and LexusAdmirer- stupid argument. The "prestige" argument and the "reliability" argument are the two oldest, most repetitive, most annoying ones I know of. And LexusAdmirer, all you said was "Lexus >>>>>>>> Audi," which makes you look like one of "them-" a stupid Lexus fan who merely says ridiculous things and acts as if they're true. Your comment obviously was not. There are about 950,000 people in the world who like Audi better than Lexus- and there are going to be over 1,000,000 this year.

I wish my LS 460 has these headlights. Those headlights make the car look a lot better. As for the rest of the car the styling wasn't the reason I bought one. It does its job and there is no snob appeal for this so I can cruise peacefully without people thinking I'm some ignorant bastard. However I do have an S550 as well that is where my heart is. It's absolutely beautiful. Like-wise with the LS but just less flash than the Merc. Still good for what it does.

I still don't understand why you have an LS460 and an S550? Why not just one, and maybe something like an SL550 instead?

The S550 is too large to maneuver easily into the garage of our new home, so we'll probably "settle" with an A8 SWB, a gorgeous sedan in itself. Making it more gorgeous is that I'd probably order it with the "Audi Exclusive" interior in Cognac, which adds such ridiculosities (my word) as black piping on super-expensive cream leather seats, black leather piping on the equally expensive floor mats, an outrageously beautiful wood trim kit with a special inlay pattern, an Alcantara headliner, a leather dash, and of course, a wood gearshift and wood/leather steering wheel. It's only $11,500. LOL. But the A8 would still be $10K less than what our $98K S-Class would've been, which is nice.

I might be getting the CL if I decide to get rid of one of these cars. I have seen a few around and it is stunning! classy and luxurious just like my S but I love the design a lot.

It was either that or I can go get a G37 or a 3 series coupe. My friend a salesman wanted me to buy a demo he was driving for a month a 328i with premium/sport package. He could have knocked off 10K with only 3000KM (Up here in Canada). 10K off is an awesome deal I think for a 328i. Brand new it's 57-58K + taxes as well as luxury tax in CAD. A CL down to a 3 series or G37 would be a huge price drop but it's not the price that matters it's more of how it drives and if it satisfying to drive then that's good enough.

Anything would be sportier than my sedans haha.

Nice. The LS600hL, while not the most practical car, is very impressive.

I am not even going to get into the LED issue. How stupid it is that we argue over that! The R8's might be full lamps, but it DOESN'T MATTER. The R8 is obviously a hotter car, but that's a different subject entirely...

This comment is somewhat off the wall but now that LED headlamps in their infancy... I hope that all other car manufacturers make xenon headlamps standard across the board.

I'm only 25 but have a friend thats in his 60's is still impressed with halogen LOL.

Honestly, I can't wait to see LED lamps on the road at night, and see if all this hype about them is true.

The Audi R8 and the Lexus LS600hl are in different segment and compete for different customer. So than, why are comparing the two. Both the Lexus LS600hl and Audi R8 are truly a piece art.

Can you ever give credit to anyone except the Japanese brands? Are you that biased? The R8 is one of the most beautiful sports cars in the world. You used to be one of the few who actually said things that made sense- but not any more.

OH NO! OH NO! WHO HAD EM FIRST WHO HAD EM FIRST!.....LEXUS! LEXUS! no AUDI! AUDI!....Who gives two sh*ts! Neither of these companies founded the technology behind LED's, go praise the inventor if you're all so proud of LED lighting.

Just for the record though, the R8's headlight design kills that of the LS's, 001 should've saved the best 'LED article' for last.

Just gave Lexus sometime in the world's market it will be force to reckon with. It only took them 17 years to conquer the U.S. market. I says 15 to 20 years from now, Lexus brand will be recognized world wide as luxury brand like BMW, MB and Audi.

LED headlights are cool but this is not real innovation! It's just replacing an existing technology with an existing technology.

Things like the KDI camless engine now that is innovation!

When has toyota demonstrated some real innovation and technology in the automobile industry.
