Chrysler Imperial set for launch in 2010

A new flagship model based on the Chrysler Imperial Concept, that was unveiled at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, will be Chrysler’s key to stay in the game after its split from Daimler. AutoCar is reporting that the car is set for launch in 2010 and will built at the Canadian plant where the 300C and Magnum/Charger family of rear-drive saloons and estates are built.

DaimlerChrysler announced last week that it has sold a 80.1 percent stake in Chrysler Group to Cerberus Capital Management of New York, a private equity firm. Cerberus Capital Management is paying $7.4 billion for Chrysler, which unbinds the 1998 DaimlerChrysler merger. The $7.4 billion purchase by Cerberus Capital Management should generate enough cash for the company to recover and restructure.

According to Chrysler’s spokesman Rick Deneau, Chrysler expects to continue investing in the development of future products as previously planned. The Chrysler Imperial is only one of the 20 new vehicles Chrysler is planning to introduce by the end of 2009.

Too late for me as my currrent lease expires in 12 months but would definitely be on my shopping list otherwise. I've only ever owned one Imperial (a 1972). Fortunately that was a true Imperial before Chrysler ruined the brand.

Just what Detroit needs: A 15 mpg family car in time for $7/gallon gas. I like the look too, but let's hope that the new ownership decides to compete. I'm not sure that an auto company can make it by inventing new segments or putting a new twist on an old theme repeatedly.

Thank you. In this day and age......a monster like this? I'm not saying anything about its looks, quality, etc. All I'm saying is I just saw $3.50 a gallon for regular gasoline and its only May 21.

All Chrysler needs to do is FIX THEIR INTERIORS!! They no doubt have the driving & styling thing down, but I'm going to say their interiors are probably the worst in the auto world today.

Consider that they're not likely to build the concept as is (though if it came with that woman, it'd be worth it), but an extended wheelbase 300C with a nicer interior. MAYBE they'll change the exterior, but I doubt it'll be all that different; maybe a different grille. This isn't particularly new news; the extended-wheelbase 300C (New Yorker is the most likely name, but Imperial is possible I guess now that Daimler's gone) was tested by the creation of a series of extended 300Cs by an outside contractor. The real target, I suspect, is the Town Car's fleet market.
