New Totally Electric Sports Car Planned For End Of Year

Hoping to appeal to folks fed up with rising gasoline prices, the nation's dependence on foreign oil and global warming, a new company plans to offer motorists an alternative: a 100 percent electric car.

The newly formed company, Advanced Mechanical Products Inc., or AMP, on Tuesday announced plans to convert gas burning automobiles to electric-powered vehicles. The "AMP Totally Electric Car" concept was unveiled at the company's headquarters along Deerfield Road, where a green Saturn Sky two-door sports coupe was on display.

AMP officials said the car will be the first they will convert from gas to electric power.

AMP, started by local entrepreneurs, engineers and investors, plans to spend about $1 million to complete the first prototype by year's end, said Jack Kuntz, president and CEO. He said production could begin in 2008.

He said AMP plans to use existing Saturn models - including its four-door sedans and small SUVs - and replace internal combustion engines with electric motors, batteries and computer technology.

Toyota supposely be releasing a newer and improve Toyota Prius where you can get up to 100mpg. And don't forget the Honda hydrogen cars also.

When considering the viability of this vehicle I'm delighted at the possibility of avoiding throwing away an extra $200 for gasoline on top of the purchase price of a vehicle (not to mention the routine maintenance costs). All things considered, any price under $50,000 for a vehicle that requires no oil changes, no coolant and no gas EVER is fair. Most of us drive no more than 50 miles a day and how hard is it to plug in at night? This vehicle IS viable and practical NOW.

Just how green is it and how much will it save you? You still have to plug it in and that means higher electric bills and in most areas this electric is still generated using dirty coal.

Oh, even counting coal fired plants, EVs still reduce emissions over gas by more than 90 percent. The biggest reason is off-peak, surplus electrical generation, a vast, untapped renewable resource that can power millions of electric vehicles without any additional pollution.
