Ford nixes plans for new Focus RS

Ford of Europe has apparently axed plans for the development of the sporty Focus RS hot-hatch because of concerns over carbon-dioxide emissions. The RS version of the facelifted Focus due next year was one of the most eagerly anticipated models in Ford’s Euro lineup, with some customers offering deposits up to 18 months in advance.

Other reasons for nixing the model was due to a lack of interest in markets outside of the UK but the source has not ruled out a potential RS version of the next-generation MkIII Focus that’s due in 2010.

TheSailor....you're probably right on that. The only hoot and holler for european models are the american "enthusiasts". I think it's nothing more than a jealousy factor.

Although, I think it might help if the U.S. would refine their vehicles, and make them more comparable to their european counterparts.

Americans have paid for European compacts for ages, even in the Ford stable: Fiesta and Capri. My first car was a Renault 18i. I've also owned a Golf. Some Americans consider my 9-3 a compact.

I think that Ford is foolish to not exploit their non-US/Can vehicles here. They're bringing the Fiesta. As well, they should bring the European Focus as a Mercury (Bobcat/Lynx/Tracer anyone?) and nix the Milan for the Mondeo (Mystique/Topaz/Zephyr/Comet?). They'd still have the Lincoln version, so it'd give more variety and between the three. Ford and Mercury could develop more individualized personalities. If Ford were serious about the minivan market, they could also bring the Galaxy and S-Max--though Ford has never competed seriously in that segment. And we should get a Focus cabriolet, as well.
