Fifth Gear: Review of the Lexus IS 220d
The BMW 3-Series, Lexus IS and Infiniti G35 war has been one interesting battle. Well now the BMW 3-Series should watch out as Lexus goes diesel with the Lexus IS 220d. The Lexus IS 220d is powered by 2.2 liter direct-injection diesel engine that allows a combined fuel economy of 44.8 mpg. The Lexus IS 220d produces 177 horsepower with a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds and top speed of 135 mpg.

It's indeed very old. Currently the 320d has 177 hp and soon 204 hp!

Also notice how Lexus names the IS220d with a small "d" on the end.. just like ... - you'll never guess it - BMW.

What's more pathetic is that you would nitpick at that. Tell me, how does the 335i get its numerical badging when the engine wasn't even increased? All they did was add some turbos and that warrants false numbering of the vehicle? False advertising is a crime.

Bring them to the US. We need more diesel. Especially once people see the mileage! Also, is the mileage figure in British mpg or American mpg?

I think 44 UK is about 37 US.
But it ain't so great - it's clattery, there's no auto option, and despite being the most powerful (for now) it is also the slowest in its class. The 320d is a second faster to 60, and gets 5 more MPG. And that's not even the efficient dynamics model, which will be released soon, and will be faster and more fuel efficient :D

Damn though....its so gorgeous a vehicle. And the video is right (at least from my perspective), I'm not a racer. I just want a torquey, luxurious, solid vehicle. Hell, I'm mostly a US/European car guy, but this is nice.

Speaking of torquey luxury sedans...put my on the list for the 2008 CTS-diesel. I know they'll never bring it to the US, but I need one.

huu76, Toyota here has that very same engine in the RAV4, Corolla Verso, Auris, Avensis and some others and the badge on the back says "D4-D". That's how Toyota differs their diesels. Direct injected petrol engines are called "D4".

Now.. why didn't they use that on the Lexus? And why did they use a small "d"?

I know it's silly to whine about but it pisses me off!

No auto option is odd, as everyone else offers one, and these cars spend their lives going up and down motorways. They're rep cars, not driver's cars, with these small diesels. The 3 series just happens to be the best and the most popular.
And the IS weighs 150kg more than the 320d!

Why would they waste badging space to type out the word "Diesel?"

Lexus didn't even think about BMW when they named it.

Alternative fueling Lexus products all attain the first letter of the alternative source in lower-case form.

Nitpicking, which is becoming a problem here, is a sure sign that all of you have too much hate without much basis...

i think this is an old video i saw it last year. but i think the is220d is a dud because lexus does not excel in diesel technology like european are. bmw 3 diesel is the best choice in this segment.
