U.S. Automakers Continue To Lose Money On Vehicles Built In North America

Ford Motor Co. lost $5,234 on each vehicle it built in North America last year, a shortfall that's nearly eightfold what it was a year earlier, according to a much-watched study on labor productivity released today.

Nissan Motor Co. again was the most profitable automaker on a per vehicle basis followed by Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. Nissan made $1,575 per vehicle sold in North America. In contrast, Toyota made $1,266 per vehicle, while Honda made $1,368.

Each of Detroit's automakers lost money, according to the Harbour Report.

GM was the only automaker to improve its profitability per vehicle. Even with the improvement, GM loses $1,436 per vehicle, trailed only by Ford. The Chrysler Group lost $1,072 per vehicle.

I have a feeling that instead of the "big" 3 fixing their problems, will take all of their manufacturers ouside the country for cheap labor and still survive that way and yet make much more money.

A logical one at that. These companies lose billions not millions and they still operate, i don't know of any other business that can survive losing on the products they make just to get the product off the lot. Fuzzy math is a alive and well?

Hey jackass....my entire family is business people and engineers. Im an engineer. For you to find pleasure in someone getting shafted is sickening. What'd they ever do to you? Yea I don't think that factory line workers should be making what they do....but I definately don't wish poverty upon them.

You need to check your attitude at the door pal....you seriously have some issues. With that attitude some "union goon" might hear what you have to say and knock some humility into you.

This story honestly makes me want to cry. This is horrible for America. It just shows how gov't regulations and unions, while well intending, end up backfiring and putting everyone out of a job. These are American institutions that are crumbling down. DOn't get me wrong, the companies are partially to blame, but the less "free" the market is, the more blame can be placed elsewhere for failure.
