When I first started posting to this site I was more middle ground, but I just can't stand some of the crap I see here.

Rocker and Neutral did it ever occur that if address the issues that plague the auto industry in Detroit that it may actually help a declining state and our overall auto industry.

I get tired of reading all of these opinionated people who are so quick to judge others. I am not sure who I will vote having voted both democrat and republican. But I can say I appreciate Mr. Obama's boldness in speaking the facts regardless of his political base. We as a country need to deal with the truth.

Also if I am not mistaken he is a Harvard lawyer, I lead a consulting practice in a Big 4 Firm feel qualified to say that he is probably as intelligent as anyone on this blog and probably more qualified to comment given data he has been exposed to that none of us outside of Congress has...

As far as our Big Three, they do need to be made accountable and I don't feel sorry for them, I feel sorry for our country because of our auto industries shortsightedness from a design and build standpoint as well as our greedy union base that ignores that fact that it we can't build efficiently from a cost of manufacture standpoint they will have no jobs to guarantee and we will continue to cede automotive market share to foreign car manufactures. Sorry for the rant… But lets stick to car stuff ;-)

your right the fact that his argument of the big r in the 60's-80's fuel economy would certainly put in the know as far as what plagues the auto industry. contrary to popular belief every company makes a car that gets poor gas mileage, they arent here to save the environment they are here for revenues and profits, if gas guzzlers are doing that they will produce them. the biggest problem the big 3 has to overcome is perception while realistically there are very few bad cars. gm in particular is/has fixed many of its shortcomings with very competitive world class vechicles, in epa ratings, quality, reliability as well as other factors, that many of there offerings need no excuses. his argument sounds like a vote catcher for all those people that are to misinfomed, or ignorrant to open their eyes and see how things are. for that matter why appear to be against american car companies while ignoring the fuel economy of other countries cars, that sounds like a good president someone that presents half truths, paints wrong pictures, and fights against the american car companies. to be honest as far as ford they have yet to figure out what gm has, and that is they make cars that can only compee with american cars, the edge, and mkx have awful interior materials quality,and look identical. are they selling yes, but why....the focus has in production since 99 and now its get a refresh 2007, chrysler has improved styling but there interior quality, and fuel economy just arent there, why? but look at gm styling, quality, reliability, fuel economy they seem to be trying hard

and another thing why is every politician focusing on cars as opposed to why are gas prices so high and rising, while these companies are seeing record profits, that doesn't sound right to me.

My main issue is that politicians say what people want to hear and then never follow thru. Where is all of the things that the new Democratic Congress promised that would happen in the first 100 Hours? How many months are we working on now Ms Pelosi?

I doubt if Obama's comments will hurt sales. Fuel conservation is a favorite hobby horse these days. My chief concerns are comfort, reliability, and durability.

You guys are right on the money. Its denial and arrogance that landed the big 3 in the big mess they're in, and clearly they're still not willing to face the very obvious facts. Very soon they'll be known as the little three while the likes of Toyota VW, Honda, Nissan and PSA clean up..

What makes it worse when a family of 4 buys a vehicle for a family of 8! If people bought cars according to how many people and cargo they have there would be more fuel left over then what we have now. Its not the fact that u can afford it but that you use what u need.

Mercedes introduced the GL for that reason. I read that people with 2 kids didn't buy the ML because it was too small.

It all comes down to the basic supply and demand equation. If the are demands for those big gas guzzling full size pick ups and suvs, some auto manufactures have to provide them. You can't defy physics, big and heavy will never be as efficient as small and light. Obama needs to consider the root of the problem before he comments on the domestic auto manufactures; it also show his ignorance.

Doesn't matter what Obama says, subpar vehicles from the Big 3 just can't compete globally and domestically.

Last I checked GM's sales were up, and last I checked, GM's international sales were driving their profits. GM is #1 in China, and #2 in Korea.

to be honest i think it was an ignorrant comment, because blamed profits, and people losing jobs on fuel economy. the only company out of the big 3 that dont offer a sufficeint amount of high epa cars is chrysler, both ford and gm offer cars with good epa ratings as well as hybrids, afv, and diesels. realistically the days when just about every american car were gas guzzlers has passed decades ago most people here wouldnt be old enough to remember. so that was an ignorrant comment, that supported the misinformed, perception driven consumers, that believe the first thing they hear or anything that sounds good. the big 3 are/were losing market share due to subpar vehicles by comparison to the competition, which gm seems to be the only company improving their biggest problems both styling and interior quality

Ford deserves all the criticism they are getting. They brought themselves down to this point and now are too ignorant to accept the facts and make any changes. Although Ford does provide fuel efficient cars, their quality is still far behind the competition. Chrysler on the other hand has too many gas guzzlers and their quality is below average. GM has made several strides and their continuing with their success in the last couple of years.
I guess the truth hurts and 2 of the big three are too scared to accept the facts.

S4cabriofoxone: the reason I don't just buy a Lexus is that there are better cars available such as the Audi A8 and the Mercedes S-Class. I don't have to do anything for about a year when my current A6 lease expires and there is a lot of choice coming down the pike for the 2008 model year that will offer much better value than the A8 and S. BTW, how's your new A8 doing? did it fit your garage?
