New Honda Accord will offer a clean diesel engine but no hybrid powertrain

Tokyo, Japan - A report by the Green Car Congress, quoting the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, says that Honda will not introduce a hybrid model of the new Accord when it undergoes a full design change this fall for the North American market.

Honda just couldnt get it right. The Camry hybrid sold almost 7000 units last month. The Accord didnt have enough power to claim it was a performance hybrid. Certainly not in an age of new, efficient, powerful V-6s like the Camry's 3.5. And, of course, the Accord hybrid did not have nearly the mpg that it needed to compete with the Camry or new Altima hybrids (which also make decent power.)

So now they switch to "clean" diesel. Didnt they learn anything from MBZ? Hopefully by 2009, diesels will actualy be clean enough to sell in the 50 states. But by then the EPA will need to invent a new level of clean for the hybrids, while diesels try to reach today's base standards.

Smart decision Honda! Just make sure the diesel has DOHC instead of short-changing us with a SOHC unit.

It's a good start. I think diesel is the stop-gap of the future. Hybrid batteries are going to be getting a bad rap sooner or later, hydrogen is way off in the future, and everything else is impractical for one reason or another. Diesel is here now. Bravo Honda. Just don't puss out like MB.
