New corvette may produce this much power but CTS-V,i doubt it.

Crazier things have happened. Just look back a few years ago when a world class sports car had 400 BHP!!!

Rumor has it, that Cadillac wants to make this a M5 killer. 600 hp may make actually faster, but I don't know about the "killer" status.

It might just end up like the old RS6- goes like a train in a straight line, but unfortunately, corners like one too.

Engineering a road car is not all about the horsepower. Granted a powerful engine is an important part of the ingredient but every enthusiast out there knows that it is only when coupled with a sophisticated suspension setup and a balanced chassis do you have a truly great sports saloon. This sweet spot in the balance between power and handling is what Cadillac would have to do to make this an "M5 killer". Good luck Cadillac!

So they are moving the CTS into 5/E/GS/A6 territory. This along with BLS' switch to RWD is pretty smart but where does that leave the STS/STS-V and DTS?

I don't need 700h.p. The 300 h.p. Northstar V8 is quite adequate. The 2008 CTS is on my shopping list even though it only has a V6. I like the fact that both RWD and AWD versions will be offfered and that LSD will be available.

Move the STS up into S class territory and dump the DTS?

They have no choice but to move the STS in S class, 7 series, A8, LS territory.
So my previous theory of the BLS competing as an affordable though not so small luxury car like the 1 series was wrong. The CTS will then be moving up to 5 series category. I don't see how GM will pull this of but i give them credit for pushing Caddilac.

Wow! that really crazy if the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V will have 600hp supercharged V-8. So it that mean the BMW M division and Audi RS division are going to up their hp?. And what about MB and Lexus? are they going to up their horse power too?

Mercedes is never behind; don't be surprised if a 750hp C-Class AMG is in the works. LOL.

I would believe this article if they DIDN'T say supercharged LS7. I am guessing it will be a supercharged motor and maybe even 550-600hp, but it will be based more around the 6.2L escalade block than the block from the LS7. The LS7 is just not beefy enough for any pressures above those it produces with it's standard compression ratio.

yeah edmunds reported that it wont be the 7.0 liter it will be the 6.2 liter from the escalade, i wonder what that would do to gas mileage the current corvette, and and z06 get really good mileage compared to cars with similar power and engine size

Z06 gets good gas mileage thanks to a fairly tall 6th gear and a fibre glass body, plus a really streamlined shape.

cadillac still doesnt get it. you can have a 1000hp CTS-v and still no one will buy it. just make a better car...stop concentrating on adding something that the current CTV-v doesnt need.

I like Cadillac because it is something different from the usual "blah" from MB, BMW, Lexus, and Infiniti. The CTS even looks better.

wow someone is stuck in a different decade, i would totally disagree 600 hp if thats true sounds a bit like overkill but the cts i think is an amazing car for gm, and in general, sounds like you and GM need marital counseling

Oh and BTW, if this really happened (amazinBimmer), not only would it be the most powerful in its class, but it wouldn't have old tech- 600hp out of a 6.2L is pretty good, especially when Mercedes is using that displacement to get 470-520hp in various models.

Otherwise, I don't think this should happen. 500hp is more than enough in a car this size- although it's positioned as a 5/A6/E (so is the STS), it's more of a 'tweener.

In the 65 AMG, which uses a 6.0, Merc get 600 hp.
And the S600, which bizarrly uses a 5.5 V12, they get 510 hp.

Don't worry, I love Merc and know they're good engineers. I was just proving a point.

Re comments about moving the STS into the S-Class market, that's pretty hard to do without completely changing its character and using some very expensive components. Cadillacs in general offer better value than Mercedes cars. On the negative side, many Cadillac customers still appear to want a lot of bling for their money. Lately, Cadillac has been a technology leader with impressive developments like the DOHC Northstar engine and magnetic ride. As a teenager, my first car was a used 1947 Cadillac and I'm now thinking about buying a 2008 CTS with RWD and LSD.

It's 507 from 5 liters. And Porsche and Ferrari have done far better. F430? 4.3 liter producing 490hp. 911 GT3? 3.6 liter producing 420hp. Both are N/A

The M5 and M6, of course. And the amg 63 is actually a 6.2 liter, the number comes from a classic benz.

I think I was having a slightly retarded day then...I didn't even see the fact you were talking about BMW not Merc.

The current CTS-V isn't that far behind an M5 the way it is and I would venture to say it has a more forgiving ride. So the only thing keeping it behind is probably some attention to comfort.

It's still a cheap CTS....entry level Caddy. C'mon, Motor Trend also wasted space when they featured this car in their July edition.

If Cadillac charged 90,000 dollars for the CTS-V it would be just as good as the M5. It is a competing car for 35,000 less

i think if alot of gm's cars costed as much as the competition they would be alot nicer, like teh corvette, if the corvette costs as much as the 911, maserati coupe, etc, (which all are 2 to 3 times more) it would be just as nice. the cts-v isnt a true m5 competitor the price difference is to substantial, and there is no way a 30-50 grand cadillac will be as nice as the 50-90 grand 5 series, so these people in here with that argument arent making sense, but it will be a good car for those that need an m5/e63 sized car on an s4, m3 budget.

GM really wants to put Cadillac up with the M5, E63, and S6/RS6 now. With 600 horsepower I think they can do it especially in a straight line. However quality issues like with the current one is still a major problem. I wouldn't feel good about punching it. However in the German saloons I would.

However 600HP does sound a little high. It should be around the same as the current one. Maybe 50HP more around 450. With better quality it will get great reviews.

I dont have a problem with it as long as this power is under control. But I really dont think BMW or the germans care what cadillac comes up with.

This is all somewhat ridiculous. Who cares how much HP you have...once you have 300-400hp, you have enough. It's almost stupid to be spending so much money just so that you can tell all your buddies you have 700hp! I'll gladly settle with either the base 3.6 liter or the 300hp 3.6 liter direct injection. With gas a 3.40+ per gallon, the hell with 700hp!

If this thing handles better than the previous V then this should have no problem beating any four door out of Europe, lets face it it smoked the S4 around the track and the S4 is AWD
