Edmunds Tests The Fantastic New BMW 535i

Back in April, I was one of the first customers in the US to pick up delivery of the sensational new 2008 BMW 535i. I had wrote an article here titled 'The BEST BMW 5 sedan yet?'
Now, Edmunds has finally tested the new 535i and here's just the beginning of what they had to say:

BMW refreshes the 5 Series for 2008, and the biggest improvement is found under the hood of our 535i. This sedan with its twin-turbo six instantly obsoletes the 550i V8.

But I can't help wondering what BMW will do about the 550i now..

There is a 4.4 litre biturbo V8 (N64B44O1) engine that is in the works for the 550i pushing out 400 HP+ & 400+ ftlbs of Torque. The X6 will be the first to debut this engine and if marketing wants it sooner will be in the 2009 550i.
The N64B44O1 engine will also replace the X5 V8, and will also power the F01/02 750i.

Admiral:

Where did you find this news?? If thats true, the mid size sports sedans segments is going to get very interesting.

Your're right. The interesting thing is you have more options on the 535, like AWD- 535xi.

They should offer this 535i in Europe too. It's alot faster than the 540i and almost equally fast as the 550i.

Not where I live (Germany)! A shame!

I also love the fact BMW dumped their rubbish SMG gearbox and now you have the possibility to choose between a normal automatic transmission and the sport automatic which shifts double as fast (200ms/2= 100ms), has paddles on the steering wheel and an all-new gear lever.
(http://www.bmw.de/de/de/index_highend.html on the left side you can select the transmissions)

I think the 540i is completely obsolety here. It does 0-60 in 6.1 seconds. A 530 does it in 6.3 and the 535d in 6.4... says enough.

Also I would like to see this engine in every BMW model. I think it would fit excellent in the X3 and X5.

Not in the UK either!
Stupid 540 is barely faster than the 530.
And in the X3? Doubt it, the 3.0d and 3.0 tt already both out accelerate the 3.0si. The 3.0i tt would be out performed by the less powerful diesel.
Possibly in the X5 though.

"I love a good sport sedan (my own ride is an '88 535i), and the '08 535i is a master. It's incredibly solid, the brakes could stop a bullet and the handling inspires pure confidence. On a decreasing-radius on-ramp usually taken at 10 mph, I powered through the turn. What a driver's car. Great thick, meaty steering wheel and fantastic seats. And that rich, full-sounding stereo, whether playing Oscar Peterson or Pink Floyd. BMW really has it right with the keyless entry, too. Grab the door handle to unlock it, and touch the outside of the handle to lock. That's it."

BMW just keeps improving and boy they are the best in the business! Congrats!

I like your style w/ the 88 535. That's a classic. I use to own a 528e. True BMW.

Agreed. The cool solid lines that BMWs use to have, have long since been deep sixed for this soft and fruity look. Bring back the hard stuff I say.

The interior looks way better...I'd personaly take a 550i over this though.

Totally, put a vishnu black blox on the 535i and it will own the 550i. The 550i is obsolete IMHO.

And a I bet if you put a wushu kit on a 550, it'll own an M5. C'mon. I'll take the 550 if I had to choose btw the 535 and 550. If you're gonna be a bear...be a grizzly.

We should have nuked these crooks instead of the Japanese who at least fought an honorable war.

Ok, kid, you're really messed up you know that? The Japanese were just as attrocious when it came to war crimes as the Germans. Hell, our historical societies have written off OUR attrocities during World War. How about when we excecuted German and Italian prisoners of war in North Africa? Or the American division which "accidentally" shot and hid Italian civilians in the mountians of Northern Italy?

Or how about this?

US Atrocities in Sicily - During the invasion of Sicily in 1943, the U.S. 45th (Thunderbird) Division killed more than 100 German prisoners at Comise airfield, Gela, Buttera airfield on seperate occasions. Two soldiers were accused of murder. Later in April 1945, the same 45th Division would execute the guards at Dachau prison.

Yes, World War II was nasty and all sides did nasty things. Grow up, kid.

Japanese fought an honourable war?

Xdrive,

I mention a couple of attrocities committed by American troops during WW2 and immediately I am labelled an "America basher"?

I am a history teacher, it's my job and unlike most of my fellow history teacher's, I am not afraid to talk about OUR wrongdoings during WW2. Most of my students don't know about the crimes we committed because it's not taught in school. Only the evil "Nazis" and "Nips" were capable of such things (sarcasm).

Apparently, you didn't know this as well.

And for your information, I am an American!

I'll still take the A6 in spite of the fact that Audi is still using an inherently-out-of-balance V6 design with 90 degrees between cylinder banks. Audi's interiors trump BMW interiors. Also Audi's AWD system with the Torsen center differential is superior.

JRobUSCJRobUSC - 6/6/2007 7:38:13 AM

First, come down off your soapbox with the "Audi interiors trump BMW interiors" bit, it's tired. Go actually LOOK at the cars before you retread old opinions. The new 5-Series interior is very nice, I've actually been in it. So is the Audi's, been in that too. Second, the xDrive system is more than adequate, you're not taking your A6 or 535xi off roading. I actually prefer it because it allows the car to drive 100% in rear wheel drive if conditions allow. The Audi doesn't. Of course, I'd rather have the rear drive version anyway because it's lighter and handles better. You can't get that at all with the Audi. Third, and this is the most important, the 535 is more fun to drive than the A6, period. And the 535 offers A6 4.2 performance with better fuel economy, lower price, free maintenance, etc. That's a nice combo.

JRob, the interiors and AWD opinions are pretty true. BMW can have flaws, you know- Audi can beat them in some areas.

But FrontTrack, which most Audis are equipped with...suck. It's just physics and the laws of leverage. But the interiors are extremely nice, I'll give you that. Yo Joe!!

Awesome car.
The interior also makes it up to par with the competition. Difference is this handles better. BMW has a winner.

I took in my M5 to have the HUD adjusted and they gave me a new 750Li with 500 miles on it as a rental. Yeah, I know…the nerve. LOL.

Point is that 4.8L is still pretty sweet. It just pulls and pulls….smoothly. And by no means does the big long wheelbase 7 feel underpowered. It’s still an incredibly impressive powerplant. I like it better than the twin-turbo six.
