2008 Honda Accord to get over 60mpg

If Honda & Toyota both start offering diesel engines in the US, consumers will more-than-likely start to embrace them again. Assuming the 2.2L diesel powerplant will compare favorably with similiar sized gasoline engines on torque output, then this next gen Accord i-CTDi should be a hit.

60 mpg!! wow, even if it were in UK mpg that would be a real breath of fresh air!

And yes, there is a diesel, a 2.2, and it is very good.
52 UK MPG combined, which is 43 US combined.

62.8mpg in a midsized sedan. I'll believe it when I see it, and then hope thatit then gets emissions certified for sale.

Wow, i agree with SoCal for once. "It would take manuf. like Toyota and Honda to put diesel on the map in the US on a large scale.". Correct, it needs to be offered to the masses over a variety of vehicle types such as budget, mid size etc etc.

I'm glad Honda is getting back to what they started originally with Hybrids. 60mpg is impressive. It should definitely find some returning Honda customers. Good job Honda. But Toyota will still outsell Honda in terms of hybrids no doubt.

All I can say is 60mpg (US gallons) on a sedan of the accord's size.......without being hybridized......MADNESS!!

Hopefully US gov't regulations would ease up a bit. The 2007 NOx - Particulate regulations are nuts, and the 2010 and just ridiculous. The beaurocrats (ie idiots) are killing us here!!

Ease up some of the restrictions, let the domestics and europeans make some money on diesels here. For example, I would love to have a Saturn Aura with the 1.9liter diesel thats in the Cadillac BLS.

yes please ease up, we need to decrease the population as more people succumb to lung cancer. I just dont get diesel fans. Dont you like to breathe when you drive?

diesel is supposed to beat more efficient than hybrid mpg... that's why you don't see to many german auto makers going hybrid left and right

How about both? Because if you want a car that gets great performance AND great mileage, diesels just simply kill hybrids. That's what they're made for. Take a car like the A8L 4.2TDI for example- 30-35 US mpg, with 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds.

The A8 is around 27 US mpg, but around 37 on the highway.

Wow! 60 mpg on a mid size sedan that is really impressive.

Honda isn't copying Toyota. It was Ferdinand Porsche who first invented the hybrid car. You give Toyota too much credit. I believe it was 1899-1906 they produced the Lohner Porsche. I think that was before Toyota was even founded(1937).

Secondly, I love like the Honda/Acura brand especially their current TL and the NSX.

Third, yeah...I admit, German were the first to make mass vechicles. Yeah I gave credit for that for sure.

But at the same time you have to gave Toyota/Lexus for being an example. They were the one that start this fuel or should I say the Japanese brands were the one that started this fuel effiency trend.

I have Never say Toyota were the first to invent hybrid.

Do you know how limited they were to what they could work with at those times?

Toyota and the rest of the Japanese brands was formed later and didn't have to go through the difficulties of getting a basic idea going.

But currently Toyota hybrid is the best in the market and just wait for the hybrid gen to come out.

Toyota is releasing their next hybrid sometime next year for the new Prius model which will get 100 mpg. And Honda is releasing their hydrogen vechicles.

What a lot of people fail to realize about the new diesel engines is that the air coming in the engine may be dirtier than the exhaust going out of the tailpipe. The new Honda will run cleaner than most gasoline engines. I look forward to seeing a change in the market. This release will make the rest wake up see the real value of the diesel engine.
