Toyota Hybrid Sales Have Topped 1 Million

Toyota said Thursday global sales of its hybrid vehicles have topped 1 million, a landmark for the Japanese automaker that leads the world in "green" cars.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s cumulative sales of gas-and-electric-powered vehicles totaled 1.047 million as of the end of May. Of those, nearly 345,000 hybrids were sold in Japan, while 702,000 were sold abroad.

Though I can't find historical numbers for MB. Here's a couple things to chew on:

- Diesel's account for 7.5 million (or half) of Europe's car sales, that's a bit more than 1 million.
- Diesel's have been around since the 30's (so MB is probably at the 1m point by now)
- Diesel's account for 14% of MB's European sales

Oh, and additionally, for BMW.... 40% of their 2006 sales were diesels. They sold 1.2 million cars in '06, putting their diesel sales at about 480,000. Including almost the same numbers in '05... they are already well past the 1 million mark.

This includes the Lexus hybrid models too.

It's really no wonder why (allegedly) Toyota is looking at a whole separate brand for their hybrids. Pulling together the best resources and engineers, putting them in one building and letting them work on hybrids would be a brilliant strategy from my perspective.

But if the brand were to take off, they'd eventually end up like Lexus, with their own exclusive designers/engineers/etc. I was just thinking very distantly into the future.

No sense to build a hybrid only brand since every popular model will get hybridizing treatment. Plus right now, Hybrid => Toyota, Toyota => Hybrid.
