Deport it - Import it: Can we have the 43 mpg Volkswagen Polo?
Japanese auto makers seem to have taken over the sub-compact market in the US. Toyota has the Yaris; Honda has the Fit; and Nissan has the Versa. So why aren’t German auto makers answering the call? We’re going to ask the largest German auto maker, Volkswagen, to step up to the challenge.

While we don’t have any Volkswagen models (we’d never give up the Golf) in the US that we would trade with the European market, we would definitely love the idea of seeing the Volkswagen Polo in US dealerships. We think the Volkswagen Polo would kick some serious Japanese butt in the US. Why?...

As long as it can pass the more restricted Diesel requirements in the US then it should be a 'GO'! I truly hope Diesels become more popular as well as diesel hybrids.

The French have also very good Diesel engines.

It's not the same, in the Yaris it's a 1.4 and in the Mini it's a 1.6.
It is the same as the one in the Peugeot 207 however.

Volkswagon uses their own exhaust-treatement systems; it not the same as BlueTec, but the two companies are sharing the "Blue" name.

The VW Polo BlueMotion will get better real world mpg than any current U.S. car on the market. Additonally, the Polo BlueMotion will, like all other diesels, accept any blend of biodiesel without loss in fuel economy or performance.

Whether or not there will be some kind of Prius 3 to challenge diesel technologies is irrelevant, since diesels are still more alternative-fuel capable and more fuel effient than gas engine vehicles. That fact makes them a viable technology and a viable choice for consumers. That is all that really matters. Every diesel doesn't have to stand up against every hybrid every time, for someone to feel good about buying one. We have two technologies that improve fuel economy; reduce carbon emissions; and reduce petroleum consumption. In fact, with a diesel, one needs only some petroleum-fuel blend in the winter, and can go petroleum-free in the Summer. Plug-in hybrids will have the disadvantage in that they will require more electrical energy from our utilities, but--then again--none of these solutions are perfect.
