BMW wants to work more closely with Mercedes
BMW’s Marketing Chief, Michael Ganal told a German newspaper that it wants to strengthen its relationship with rival Mercedes-Benz. The two currently share hybrid components and technology in order to develop premium hybrids for their lineup within the next three years.

Why? is there a corporate merger in the works or an antitrust case brewing?

A mereger? hardly... BMW is well aware of the soon to be BIG comeback from Mercedes-Benz. Its to their benefit to work closer together with Mercedes.

The winners will be the consumers, which will get the best of both worlds. This will be a great thing to see!

The LAST thing Mercedes needs is BMW on their backs weighing them down. They just got rid of Chrysler, why would they pick up BMW? ;)

I can't believe that you are comparing Chrysler to BMW. BMW is profitable, while chrysler is not. The BMW 3-series outsells the MB C-class.

why wouldn't it be a good idea? BMW needs help in the luxury, interior, exterior dept, while MB need help in the driving dynamics dept. It's a win, win if you ask me.

What amazing cars are lexus putting out?

You mean those cars that keep losing to BMW in comparison tests? LOL!

Lexus is nice, but only fools (or blind fanboys) believe that they are nicer than MB or BMW.

How is BMW not mass market? 1 series, Mini?
Merc is now the independent one.

Very nice a Ocean Drive 6 series? These two all but hate each other, Clinton ain't talking to Obama for the betterment of mankind or the demo party, like these two going at it for president, BMW and MBZ are never going to be in bed with each other?

I think "wants" is far too strong a word.
"realises it needs to" is more appropriate.

Rupert,my point is that bmw 1 series is a smaller 3 series. Audi for examples uses many mass market Volkwagen ( the peoples car) engines and parts of the Beetle, golf, polo, toureg etc. So why pay so much money for VW with a 4 ring symbol. You know the answer Rupert I like telling you audi and lexus fans the truth, because your audi is a cheap imitation of a luxury car.

My Audi is a cheap imitation of a luxury car?
Firstly I don't have an Audi, I have a VW, and secondly, yeah, whatever you say.
Audi is a luxury car, I know that, the sane people on this site know that, and I don't need to explain why to the likes of you.

i typed in, "define: oligopoly" into Google and this is what I got...

-An industry where a few (three or four) major firms produce a high (80%) proportion of industry output. This allows every firm to charge a higher price, produce fewer goods, and earn higher profits.

-A market structure with just a few firms controlling a high percentage of total sales, such as car manufacturing.

-A market structure with a few firms supplying most of the output. Firms know that their actions affect each other.

-Where an oligopoly exists, a few large suppliers dominate the market resulting in a high degree of market concentration

-A domestic or international market structure comprising several firms, each of which is large enough to affect prices but none of which holds an uncontested monopoly position. While limited price competition may occur among sellers in an oligopoly, a single large producer may assume a leadership position in establishing prices or terms of sale that the other firms will tacitly follow. When concerned action or collusion occurs among oligopolistic firms, the association is known as a CARTEL.
