For road trips, I say the R320 Bluetec is best bar none. Lowest driver fatigue of any car on the market, spacious for six adults, lower profile than minivans or SUVs, diesel for good fuel economy. Aside from that, Swedish cars need a nod for top notch supportive seats. Volvo S80 3.2 - comfortable, spacious, 30mpg.

The Toyota Pris "best vehicle for distant trips"??? No way.

Toyota Prius is WAY too small.
But for the overall, the R is perhaps not as great. It depends as to where u go, b/c in places like the Bronx/Detroit it would be stolen/dismantled. On top of that, it only fits 6 adults if
1. they're 5-foot-2 on average
2. they don't bring anything along.

I would personally say that the Maybach 67 would be a good choice, and 4 those who don't want 2 drive a tank there is the Audi A8L W12 for a medium-sized family or even the S8 if you have younger kids, and like some oomph under the bonnet.

For a long trip I'd go with the Lexus LX 470 or Rolls Phantom

Anything over 4,000lbs and tinted windows should make for a nice trip. Lightweight cars(especially FWD econoboxes) just feel like they're in a fight to the death with oncoming wind, at 80mph.

Definitely not the LR3. Land Rover probably has the worst reliability records of all car makers. I wouldn't risk ruining a trip in one of those. A land cruiser makes a lot more sense.

About "Distant Trips": it's ridiculous to pick the Prius. The Prius is only eco friendly when it's used for stop and go city driving. Won't save you anyhing on freeway driving.

Exactly. The Prius is in its prime in the city, not on highway, even at constant speed. A Jetta TDI will deliver better highway MPG by far.

You are both short-sighted by your anti-hybrid bias. Even when the Prius is in full gasoline mode, it is still a lightweight, compact, small-engined vehicle that gets good fuel economy.

Go on to other website forums and look at the typical mpgs of actual hybrid owners, who take their Prius up to Newark for Thanksgiving from South Carolina and still achieve 50mpg...

Well, if you put a small diesel engine in a prius, take out those heavy NiMH batteries. It'll achieve even more than that on a long road trip. Let see who's short signted now.

Nein! Only real German cars, made for Autobahn-cruising, are good 4 road-tripping. Audi, BMW and to a lesser extent Merc (too flashy) are the only ones comfy enough, powerful enough, and with enough features and style 2 last a lifetime.
