Test Drive:2007 BMW X5 4.8i

When BMW introduced the X5 in late 1999, they created a whole new type of vehicle – a luxury SUV that handled like a… well, BMW. With wide street tires, taught body control and sharp steering response, this SAV (sport activity vehicle in Bimmer lingo) was clearly not made for boonie-bashers. It was aimed squarely at the upwardly mobile urban trendoids who wholly embraced the concept of a pricey and rugged Euro image builder.

With the all-new 2007 X5, BMW has kicked every parameter up a notch. It’s bigger, more agile, more refined and even more luxurious. Not that you were actually slumming it in the old X5, but this edition’s interior is noticeably richer in its materials, and exudes a more modern and sumptuous ambience.

My tester was an X5 4.8i (base price $73,500), motivated by a rorty 4799 cc DOHC 32-valve V8 that generates 350 hp at 6300 r.p.m. and 350 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 r.p.m. Mated to a slick shifting six-speed Steptronic manumatic, the V8 moves this 2420-kg ute with authority, making the most delicious noises while doing so. BMW chose to allow a fair bit of aural stimulation to enter the cabin, and even while cruising on the highway, the distant rumble of the bent-eight is a subtle reminder that you sprung for the bigger motor.

Like or Hate, you can't deny the X5 is the best handling SUV.
It can't go off road but it was never meant to do that but drive like a sports sedan.

I bet you lust over some crap which you've riced with 16inch pink rims, purple neon lights and rear spoiler the size of a Boeing jet.

A Honda Ridgeline? Your kidding right? The Ridgeline is the most anti-truck in the business. Basically a minivan with a truck body. A modern day Honda interpretation of an "El Camino". Worthless as a truck but still hauls a big screen home from Circuit City.

I just can't get over these riceburner fans sometimes.

I am not a huge fan of BMW, but this X5 is pretty cool. How can you not like the mondo engine version of just about anything?

Ricemaster: I know you're still in love with your first car and all, but hopefully someday when you can afford something better, you will see the light.

Most North American's refer to "truck" as an SUV anyways at least in the younger generations. The X5 is a great SUV. I'm sorry it's not 'RICE' enough for you. Honda Ridgeline? are you kidding me? I would much rather get the Toyota Tacoma. I love Honda don't get me wrong but they haven't been truck builders like Toyota has.

I bought 2001 Acura MDX because of all the magazine hype. 6 months later, I traded it in for a 2002 BMW X5. Do not believed what people write. You have to test drive it yourself to understand. The MDX is a bargain and that is probably why magazine praise it. But in my case it, it is not a bargain. I lost $10k in the trade and have to fork out another $30k for the X5 but never regretted it. I love my X5. With this new design, I am just waiting for the folks at BMW to drop that twin turbo engine from the 335 and I am in love again.

WOW! Same as me! I bought an '01 MDX, then a year later traded for an '03 X5!!

I am extrememly pleased with my 2007 BMW X5. It is a fantastic vehicle in almost every single way. I looked at the MDX, but it was just way too ugly and besides, I already had an MDX ('01) and didn't like it. My X5 has excellent handling, probably better than most sedans, and definately all SUVs.
As for offroad abilities, its no rock crawler, but the improved xDrive system is excellent.
For carrying four passengers and ALL their luggage in the highest comfort, and also having a superb handling versatile vehicle, the X5 is at the top of the class.

LOL I'm pretty confident given a choice between the MDX and an X5, money not being an issue, maybe 10% would choose the MDX.

Yes, for the money, MDX is a good buy. But when a person is shelling out $70,000 for an SUV, he doesn't care about saving money or saving gas. The MDX is for middle management, the X5 is for the executive on the rise.

In business, presentation is everything. The MDX simply does not present very well. IT LOOKS LIKE A DRESSED UP HONDA PILOT.

Wish they'd use aluminum for the X5's doors, hood, tailgate and generally lighten it to about 4,500lbs curb weight. It's at 5,485lbs right now and that makes it a porker. Handles beautifully but you have to credit exceptional design (at it's handling limits though). I'm thinking of stripping out my X5's seats, and putting thin, lightweight ones instead. Have already removed the third row (after wasting $1300 to order it in the first place- how's that now for car-sense). The rear seat removal has only saved 64lbs though.
WHY CAN"T BMW USE MORE ALUMINUM??

addendum to above- 5,485 lbs with the V8 (I believe its about 170lbs less with the inline 6)

I've heard they're going to, next year. I don't understand why they didn't put the N54 in it in the first place- it's not like it wasn't developed enough. E92 had it a few months later.

The American obsession with performance shows again: why does this SUV have to be faster? It's pretty quick already!

No, it's not. 0-60 in 8.5 seconds does not help BMW's case here in America.

The Escalade has a 400hp V8, and it's also $10K more than an X5 3.0si. If you want to compare apples to apples, compare it to the similarly-priced, similarly-quick X5 4.8i.

Im feeling offended in here.... RICEMASTER thanks for calling me a poor executive but before you start saying shit, can you even afford the X5?

Its not cheap, it costs almost as much as a 7 series here. The handling is unbelievable for this size, and Im a current M5 owner so I know what handling means.

Its just the best SUV (SAV) out there, and it does go offroad, not as some people here think and with the sport kit, its also the best looking. I just wish it had a faster engine, and if they upgrade the engine, Im gonna trade mine.
