Toyota Puts The Brakes on the Heavy Duty Tundra Development

I drove one too and they are nice. But I couldn't drive such an ugly truck. The new Avalanche is the best looking truck on the road....just my opinion.

This is the most BEAUTIFUL truck on the road, all others always looked like garbage, now they look even worse.

Right now the version to compete against the F350 isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. Also the article said Nissan has totally scraped their plans to move up to HD versions of the Titan.

Hey aren't Tundras on recall for crankshaft problems. Toyota makes mistakes too people, don't kid yourselves.

Funny, a relative's '02 Honda Accord had a tranny problem at 60,000 miles. Odd....Honda seemed to get no bad press for that. Lord know if it was a Ford or GM that had that EXACT same problem, half the people on this site would be whining and complaining.

I still see people complaining about the Big3's reliablility, even though the reliability issues that nearly ALL automakers had in the '80's have almost disappeared.

Hell, there was an article a few weeks back about the new Saturn Vue, and there were still idiots saying that the switch from the Honda 3.5 to the GM 3.6 would lead to immense qualtiy issues, blah blah blah. All a ton of BS!

3rd party suppliers are many times the reason why automakers look bad. Mercedes has electrical problems in the 90's b/c of their electrical suppliers. They've address this through ultra-extensive testing and by un-outsourcing lots of their electrical work.

Is Honda still using that transmission? As far as I've heard, they haven't had any tranny problems as of recently, however I don't really keep up on Honda news too much!

my dads 89 accord had a tranny problem past 100k, it was pricey to replace, but now these tranny problems persist in the v6 models of accords. and yes my dad did say it was from a 3rd party supplyer. when the current refresh was on sale, no problems were ever heard of. the tranny now is built in jpn. it had a smoother response than my dads older accord but still drives gr8 until tht accident.

I don't particularly favor the styling of the new Tundra either, but rest assured, if I were in the need of a truck, the Tundra would be at the top of my list.

There was an interesting small news segment about the new Tundra and its effect on Detroit this past Sunday night on either CNBC or MSNBC. One thing that I pulled from it that I found particularly interesting is that Toyota wants everyone to believe that they are not trying to take over Detroit. Toyota believes that a humble approach, along with the fact that the Tundra is built in Texas, add to that the Tundra being as big as it is, is key to their North American success with this vehicle. Toyota admittedly did not even have the most ambitious selling goals for the Tundra. What I think makes Toyota such a unique company is that unlike most other companies that only approach sales records from a product and advertising perspective, Toyota puts a heavy focus on how their products appeal to everyone, and how people think of Toyota. Toyota is like the successful and smart, yet shy and humble guy that wants everybody to like him. I think it's done wonders for them.

Tundra's sales volume is still too low for Toyota to justify the expense of fully developing a heavy duty truck platform. I believe Toyota originally pursued this idea because they were under the impression they were going to steal a lot of fleet sales with their new truck, but the fleet managers have decided that the expense is too great for a base Tundra b-cab. Perhaps once Toyota re-tools their factory to produce the b-cab with fewer options they will be able to compete.

No matter what, Toyota will need to demonstrate a sales volume of AT LEAST 200k LD Tundras per year, with a substantial demand for their base/fleet model, before they will be able to justify spending millions on a diesel powered HD Tundra.
