GM To Build New Diesel Engine in New York

General Motors Corp. plans to retool its engine plant in Tonawanda, N.Y., to produce a new clean diesel engine for its light duty pickup trucks, a GM official said today.

The automaker, which has scheduled a news conference at the plant near Buffalo, would not comment on the announcement. But the GM official, who did not want to be identified because the announcement had not been made, said the company plans to build the new diesel engine at the plant.

The 3.1 million-square-foot plant, opened in 1937, now makes several four-, five-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. It employs about 1,850 hourly and salaried workers.
