Flick off Friday: To Ford for not giving us the Mondeo
After watching the Fifth Gear review of the new Ford Mondeo two days ago, we were even more infuriated with FoMoCo for not giving us the car hear in the US. The anger started when Ford dropped the Aston Martin line to make up for slow sales and a $12.7 billion loss in 2006, the worst financial results in its 103-year history. Now with Volvo, Land Rover and Jaguar on the table as well, we are definitely thinking that CEO Mulally is not fit to lead Ford.

Seriously, why is Ford so oblivious to bringing their successful European models to the US? If not oblivious, what the hell is taking them so long? Now we’re not some big time analysts that know how much it will cost Ford to import European models to the US, but it seems like a wise move seeing as the new Ford Mondeo is blowing up headlines worldwide.

So here is your chance to Flick off Ford for not giving us the amazing new Ford Mondeo and instead disappointing us with a new Ford Taurus that is simply a rebadged Ford Five Hundred. Comment below.

Ford should bring the Mondeo over as a Mercury or Lincoln. That would be a more logical way to account for the extra cost.Mulluly was interested in the Mondeo. It's a matter of cost and exchange rates.

Has nothing to do with exchange rates...they could have built this in a North American plant had they planned to do so from say one like with the original Focus. Ford just sucks and they are too worried with focus groups and b.s. like that to actually bring a good car to market...I mean come on a rebadged Five Hundred as a Taurus?? Come on!! Get real Ford...

Ford and GM are very weird like that. At least GM saw the light and did something with the Pontiac brand. Ford has been doing this for years. Their most successful cars never really make it to the US. The list is endles, Taunus, Capri, Sierra, Mondeo, Focus...no not that mockery of a focus, the real one.

the focus is based in europe and came to the states a yr later. the nxt focus for the US is going to be a dissapointment unlike Europes.

Read the Car and Driver and Road & Track Mondeo previews. There are just too many regulation changes between Europe and US. It would cost too much to get it over here. But, it does look about a billion times better than the Fusion.

Perhaps to import this one, but come on, with all of Ford's know-how they could have easily engineered this car to be produced in a North American plant as well... I mean come on.... The original Focus was....built in Europe and Mexico. So this crap they can't is false...its that they think Americans like big fat sedans with 3 bar grills and rebadge them with names like Taurus... LOL!!

and yet Ford has given us the Mondeo already, we just didnt want it then. it was called a Contour. back in the early nineties when the Contour/Mondeo was introduced one of the ground breaking ideas that they used was building a car that needed only minimal modifications for many different markets, ie us, europe ect. as far as bringing it back under a different brand, they tried that too. they brought a very bitchen rear drive turbo sedan with independant rear suspension over here and called it a Merkur XR4Ti, we didnt like that one either. perhaps the reason that really cool european vehicles arent brought over here is because history has taught Ford, Renault, Fiat, Lania and so many others that although we say want better, we wont buy better when given the chance.

you may be right here.... Americans don't seem to like to enjoy the art of driving that much judging by their buying habits. This is a shame.... now the original Mondeo the Contour was a bit small and seemed high priced when the deep discounts of the Taurus at the time made it seem expensive for a small vehicle. Americans saw the Taurus as better cause it was bigger. Nowadays maybe more Americans are conscience to size and gas mileage. I know living here in NYC big cars make no sense when you have to park on the street. I wish they would give it a chance one more time....

technically if they brought it as a contour its the people who never bought u shld blame cuz that costed Ford a lot of money I guess. And now with the Euro its harder to bring it

Ford appears to be in an unrecoverable free fall. Things can only get worse when interest rates rise. I predict that only GM will survive as a true American automaker.

The Contour, are kidding me? That car was an ugly piece of crap. Here's a thought, instead of importing the Mondeo from Europe, why don't they just build a similar looking car with similar features here in the U.S. and call it something different. I don't think you need a focus group and a team of analysts to figure that one out. Even if it turned out to be a flop here in the U.S. (which it wouldn't) Ford would be no worse off than they are right now with a whole line-up of flops.

Why should they give all the good cars to Americans? Ford Europe is a TOTALLY different brand. It's German (Köln) and not American.

Let Ford US make their own good cars!

It's somewhat ironic, actually.

Ford pinches pennies and doesn't bring the Mondeo to NA. In the process, they dump more garbage on us, expecting us to snap the mediocre American products up. This is while Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan and Mazda are all developing far more interesting/higher-quality/more fun bread-and-butter cars.

The effect? Ford loses billions. Almost twelve billion, to be exact. They lose their #2 place on the podium. Had they gone that extra mile to secure customer loyalty and satisfaction (in bringing great products like the Mondeo here), it would have not only saved them an inconceivable amount of money, but it could have kept them in the #2 spot, if not pushing them up to #1.

A perfect example: our Focus. Compared to the clean, fun, frugal, well-built European Focus, our "new" Focus (which rides on a seven-year-old chassis) looks like some Korean POS knockoff from 1994. I am ashamed.

You want a european car so buy one.

North American ford builds stuff carefully targeted to North American tastes- typically uneducated, overweight self unaware people who don't really care about reliability, quality and safety. They might have money or be willing to take on unwise loan terms. They want stuff that looks newer than that last taurus and they don't want to know much about it, nor ask.

Throw in the floor mats and clear coat and you have a deal. Now let the sales manager help you sign the papers. Always come back to the dealer for TOP QUALITY HIGHEST PRICE repairs and too frequent oil changes on your crappy quality North American built car. You WILL be back.
