First Drives Experience:Subaru Impreza

The Impreza has greater practicality and a higher-quality interior but bland exterior styling.

If you thought that the design of the infamous 'bug-eyed' Impreza back in 2000 was brave, or that the current generation looked too retro, feast your eyes on the car's all-new styling!

Inspired by the Toyota Corolla and BMW 1-Series, the newcomer is not just a radical departure, it's downright ugly, too. Although the bodywork is neatly finished, the nondescript nose and bulbous rear are a world away from what has gone before.

Sadly, the bad news doesn't end with the design. A turbocharged WRX model (expected to account for more than half of all Impreza sales in Japan) isn't even coming to the UK

It looks like a vacuum cleaner... and it probably sounds like one, too.

I have to say that the base impreza is pretty bland, but once you get up to the wrx and wrx sti models, you realize what a car it actually IS.

Yeah it's there. Look at the last pic. The waistline crease that runs down the side and just above the door-handles. BMW is all over that. What I don't see is any Corolla. I wonder if they are just paying homage to their new partners Toyota (who recently bought 8.7% of Subaru's parent Fuji Heavy Industries). Frankly, I can't understand how they can absolutely nail the styling of the Legacy, yet fumble the Impreza so many times over. It's sad. I think Subaru has just made me an Evo fan.

We have to wait till 2009 for a turbo version! And it looks like a cross between a Civic and a Proton!
