Rumor: Renault and AB Volvo eyeing Volvo cars

ccording to business daily Dagens Industri, Renault and Swedish truck maker AB Volvo are interested in purchasing the Volvo Group from Ford. AB Volvo orginally sold its auto unit to Ford in 1999. The report said that if Renault and AB Volvo end buying the Volvo Group from Ford, AB Volvo will hold a small share of 10 to 20 percent.

“This looks like a bad solution for Volvo’s shareholders as there is no real industrial logic in buying a stake (in Volvo Cars) … I think it would be very strange if they would take such a step”, Danske Equities analyst Henrik Breum told Reuters.

jt716-Renault owns Nissan and I would not call them a crap car company. Nissan in fact has some nice competative products out there. But again I'm not sure why Ford would sell off Volvo. It has based most of it's current products on Volvo and Mazda based chassis.I can see them selling off Land Rover and Jaguar.(especially Jaguar).Volvo has been so intertwined with their products it does not make very much sense.

Ford should get rid of Jaguar and Volvo and keep Mazda and Land Rover. Even better Ford should get rid of all brands except the house brands of Lincoln and Ford. Mercury needs to be squashed so they can focus mainly on their Ford and Lincoln brands to up the quality and design aspects of their line up.

The AB Volvo should own Volvo because they afterall are the same name. I think the owners of Aston Martin should be looking into Land Rover and Jaguar as they are all British brands. With the combination of all 3 British automakers they can help each other out.

Or drag each other down. Ford gets platforms and parts from Mazda and Volvo and selling Volvo will put Ford at a huge disadvantage.

The British companies can help each other how? They all have the same reliability issues. Maybe they can take turns giving each other rides to work but that's it. Or maybe a different shoulder to cry on but I don't see anybody benefitting from that deal. Especially Rover, Jag and Aston.

Does anybody care to explain WHY Ford ought to buy and sell the brands you guys have nominated? All i see here are your opinions -- no financial or logistics figures are offered.

This is why Mulally is running Ford, and we aren't. He will make long-term decisions based on more than personal brand preferences.

I'm really surprised that Ford is looking at selling Volvo since it really has the most value of the PAG. Ford has used them to make the Ford vehicles structurally safer (F-150, Fusion/Milan/MKZ) and even using the Rollover Sensor from the XC90 in the Edge/MKX. The handling know-how of Mazda and safety of Volvo has made a good combo for the C1/EUCD platform. Ford just brought money to the table.
