Audi will join the many auto makers that are quickly adding greener models to their lineups. Due to the European CAFE enforcing strict CO2 emissions standards, Audi will look to build a smaller, more fuel-efficient car.

Audi hasn’t done anything with the A2 since 2005, when the last few cars rolled off the line at the Neckarsulm plant in July 2005. Well now the Audi A2 is back to help Audi fight off pressure from new CO2 emissions standards. According to MotorTrend, management at Audi has worked out a strategy of making the the 2009 A2.

Audi will begin marketing the 2009 Audi A2 as straightforward subcompact car with...

The car you see in the picture.

Very high tech when it was released and very economical.
But it was to expensive, so sales weren't very good.

Aluminium construction and great aerodynamics, but tight legroom, expensive and a hard ride.
This new one will be based on the next Polo platform.

You guys have always been saying the German brands are "selling out" by making inexpensive vehicles; it's you who is being hypocritical, not us.

This car has prestige in that it is built by Audi, in an Audi fashion, styled like an Audi, drives like an Audi, has an interior like an Audi and has all the brand values of Audi.
That's what gives it prestige.
If Lexus made the most comfortable small car, then it would have prestige too.

Plus Toyota can't sell such a car under the Toyota name, far to expensive.

It's out of production. I believe it was designed in 1997 or so, so it shouldn't look great these days.

Out of production may have been the plan but it's coming back so Audi can make a political statement about cutting back on CO2. This whole CO2 debate annoys me because that Auto industry is only a minor contributor to CO2 and there are other much more damaging greenhouse gases like methane. believe it or not, a considerable amount of methane is produced in the intestines of bovines which we humans breed to feed an overpopulated planet. The answer is population control and the planting of more trees and other CO2 absorbing vegetation and not a government war against the auto industry.

Did the US not get this model before then?

It did have some innovative features, the front grille folded up to reveal swing out pipes for topping up fluid levels.... so the wife can do it herself.

It always cracked me up when Audi Fanboys said that the 1 series affected BMW's brand image.... BMW have the 1er, Merc have the A class, and Audi have the A2... they are all at it!
