New Chrysler V6 Engines Will Get 6-8% Better Gas Mileage

With gas prices consistently at record highs and consumers increasing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, Chrysler has announced new plans to boost the fuel mileage of their cars and trucks. The new family of V6 engines will have cylinder deactivation technology, which will allow them to run on 3-cylinders when less power is needed. The automaker also plans to place its new two-mode hybrid powertrain in more of its vehicles.

Why cant Americans make fuel efficient AND powerful engines? I really want to break down a foreign (toyota/honda) engine and tranny and see what the big secret is. My brothers '05 Avalon is quick, quiet, AND fuel efficient. If this was an american car of equal size, it would get NO WHERE NEAR what this vehicle gets as far as MPG figures. WTF!!!

Wow, exciting. What does that bring them up to? 20? My A3, which goes faster, carries more, looks better, costs roughly the same and has a much nicer interior averages 26mpg.

Chrysler has a pretty good new 4-ltre V6 available in some models but is still screwing lower-end customers by pawning off the older V6 on them in lesser models. Stop it Chrysler! And don't ell me that the older V6 is cheaper to produce because you can gain economies of scale by producing only the newest V6.

What's going on here? I clicked on "read the article" again 5 minutes later and get a totally different website where the article is indeed easy to read (black font on white background). I am annoyed at the fact that this new, more fuel efficient uses cylinder deactivation. I fear that cylinder deactivation will not fail safely if engine sludge becomes a problem and valves will hit pistons resulting in costly repairs. At least Chrysler's cylinder deactivation has a response time that is about six times faster than the equivalent GM system. No wonder Chrysler specifies an unusually light oil for these engines but what if you get your oil changed by someone who does not stock or who runs out of that oil and does not disclose that to you.
