2007 Mercedes-Benz CL 550: Two Door Supremacy

When Mercedes-Benz decided to redesign their CL-Class of cars, I took a long breath and wondered out loud. "How can they improve a perfect design?" came the echoes from deep within. The last CL I'd driven was the CL 65 AMG, with its hand built twin-turbo, 6.0 liter V12 that poured out 604 horsepower and a whopping 738 pound feet of torque. At $180,000 and some change, it was a bargain considering its supercar performance. So the bar was set real high when I got the opportunity to drive the all-new CL-Class.

The new model is based on the successful redesign of the S-Class, Mercedes' flagship sedan. It's a more brutish design than the svelte, rounded CL it replaces, but it works well. At 199 inches of overall length, the new CL is only six inches shorter than the S-Class. This is a big car. My tester was the CL550.

Outside, the CL's rounded roofline remains. It starts from the "A" pillar with a slight bow upwards, then drops off rather quickly as it flows into the trunkline. Two sculpted ridges have been incorporated into the beltline - one high and one low, which gives the doors and rear quarter visual depth. Side skirts carry all the way into the rear bumper, which help to provide a ground effects look. Dual chromed exhausts are enclosed in a rear finisher panel, and the rear quarter panels have power indentations that remind you of a sculpted athlete's powerful glutes. The real change comes in the huge fender flares both front and rear that give the CL a hulking image. The flares work on this car because Mercedes has wisely filled the wheel wells with staggered width 18" wheels on performance rubber. From the front, headlights that wrap around into the front fenders and a subtle chin spoiler compliment the traditional chrome slat grille and three-pointed star. This is a beautiful work of art.

NOTHING can touch this car. It has no competition in this price bracket.

When Lexus releases another coupe it will blow that thing out of the water. Remember the SC430? Now that was a real gem.

The original SC400/430 was a nice car in its time, but the current SC430 is one of the ugliest cars I have seen.

The SC430 is pure crap.
It needs to be killed and then some more.

i agree the original sc was an excellent car its was in its own class a true luxury sports car, low slung, long hood, nice proportions, but the current sc430 looks like an odd shrunken solara, it looks awful, not sure where the old lexus sc desighners went but they need them back.........but on the cl there really isnt much direct competition for it, the db9, m6, xk and 612 are smaller in size, im sure the new granturrisimo will also be smaller, so it seems right now it is the only luxury full size coupe at any price, with maybe the continental gt as only close competitor and still misses the cl on size

The Bentley is perhaps in a slighty higher class. A class of its own.

the bentley costs 50% more. so the CL still reigns supreme in its class.

I don't like the Bentley Continental and I can't afford to throw half a milllion into a Brooklands Coupe which is my dreamiest of dream cars.

"On the lower console is Mercedes' Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) controller, which is light years easier to use than BMW's I-Drive controller."

I totally agree. This gen COMAND is simply brilliant.

have you driven it? talk to us after you have.

i've only driven the CL550 version to date and i must say it's impressive...powerful, phenomenally decadent interior, and i agree that the new command system is super easy to use (its microsoft with a mouse in the car). you feel like a million bucks behind the wheel of this car.

Sevorbeupstry

But mercedes thinks otherwise... I even read an article about this topic and mercedes officials said that the V12 in the CL65 was only developed because bentley has more hp in the continental GT.

Because Bentley is in German hands. Hehe.

The horsepower war isn't over yet. It all started with the E39 M5.

Lexus, which is a camry with leather, cannot touch this work of art, so stop mentioning Benz in the same sentence.
Lexus builds cars that compete with Honda, Nissan and Kia...........Benz has Pedigree< lexus has tracing paper it uses to copy...........Get it all you lexus salesman who have invaded this chat.

dont think he dismissed just saying he could care less about its space, personally i would rather have a db9 for the money, but like i said earlier the cl is in a class of its own there isnt another full size luxury coupe period, and few cars are as many things as the cl, just like him i would pass up its size in favor of a db9, or maybe even a granturisimo

This cars biggest flaw is the fact that it doesn't have a center shift lever. No coupe should have a column shifter.
