Road Test: 2007 Audi S6

It is a genuine treat to be surprised by an automobile. Case in point is the all new Audi S6 which we had pegged for Audi’s continuing trend of overt understatement. Untangle that oxymoron for a moment: in our opinion Audi has been dangerously close to the just-too-darn-conservative precipice in many of its latest high performance offerings. We’re not asking for “Pimp My Audi” from the factory, but we are most certainly part of the chorus of Audi owners calling for greater differentiation between the well designed (but ultimately more utilitarian) base models and their more exclusive Sport brethren.

We first met the S6 – static on Audi’s stand – at the North American International Auto Show back in January. Audi’s own press fairly summed up that encounter for us, saying “[the] S6 looks unmistakably … supremely athletic out on the roads – but without even the slightest hint of aggression.” A puzzling enigma then, the S6 was a car that promised unbelievably well sorted performance all wrapped up in a rather benign package.

We therefore arrived at Audi’s S6 press launch with an inherent bias. The S6 would be given no free ride on this trip. Like a potential star player in the coach’s doghouse, the vehicle would instead need to work twice as hard to earn respect and a spot on the field. Thankfully for us, the S6 stepped up with a brilliant performance.

I love my A6 but want to try a diesel when my current lease runs out in the spring of 2008. Lots of good iron coming out betweeen now and then, forcing me to spend far too much time researching cars.

My ideal car is an A6 with TDI power and an upgraded (& lowered) suspension.
Don't get me wrong ... I love this car, and I know that the lighter A4 could be quicker in a drag-race (with the V10), but the A6 is so much better balanced and stable at high speeds.

My A6 2.7 twin-turbo (6-spd) has enough power to get me into trouble.
If I had an S6, I'd be without a license in days!

I think the S6 is the best looking car in the segment. It looks way better than that standard A6. I've seen a few on the road and they look gorgeous.

340 HP is the old S4.
Try reading the article first.
Your 335 wouldn't see the tail end of an S6 long enough to read the license plate!
(335 is a nice little car, but not in the same league as the new S6 ... this is an M5 eater)
