Europe Considers Ban on Performance Cars!

European politicians will be debating whether or not to ban high-powered sports cars from Europe as part of a goal to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions. Members of the EU will meet in Brussels on Tuesday to decide the fate of performance cars in the region, however, Germany won’t be affected by any decision.

Of major concern are some of the quotes coming from politicians, such as these gems from the man who drafted the report on how to reduce vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, British Liberal Democrat Chris Davies. Selling “boys’ toys” that exceed the 130km/h speed limit was “nonsense” and “it’s political and environmental lunacy. People cannot drive at these speeds legally. It is just boys’ toys.”

Explain to me how this will help reduce emissions and fuel economy? If these politicians are serious, then they should first off all give up flying in a private jet, being driven in W12 Phaetons or S600s and hey, why not ban commercial flights all together?

You mean, besides the fact that air pollution is a significant problem at ground level in urban cities, and that jets actually carry people faster, more securely, and with less pollution than the equivalent automobiles required to carry those people?

I can't believe you guys actually believe any of this. Nobody is banning performance cars.

What politicians are finally doing is something they should have done a long time ago -- work together to clean up air quality. In congested cities worldwide, it is bad and getting worse. This isn't a local issue anymore. Libertarians are always first to ask for free handouts, but when it comes to doing good for others on complex issues like pollution, they are always in full denial mode.

I'm all in favor of trying to reduce greenhouse gases, but this is completely rediculous. I would be very curious to see what the percentage is of high performance cars on European roads. Its times like this that I'm glad to be American.

Cars contribute a small percentage of CO2 production. Supercars are a small percentage of cars.

So the logic of this plan is to aim at the smallest, insignificant group as possible.

I can't believe they are shooting themselves in the foot that way. Europe exports high performance cars and sales to the European market help maintain economies of scale for these cars and thereby keep cost competitive. Proves again just how stupid politicians can be.
