More Info: 2008 VW Jetta Clean Diesel TDI for US

Does anyone know when the new Passat TDI will be available in the US? My family is kind of interested in getting one.

The Passat might get the diesel in the future but there is no info about it yet. And there is no guarantee that it will come out. So the Jetta is your best bet.

If only VW cleaned up some of their reliability issues, I'd be the first in line to get one. Maybe Audi can pick up this engine in their A3 line.

well we don't live in Europe. we live in the US where most of our vws are from Mexico. crappy craftsmenship as well as cheap labor there. so lots of electric infestation on most VW models. I'll consider a TDI if diesel is widely avail and clean up the quality and reliability issues.

Rupert, I too make the occasional mistake in grammar and spelling because I type too quickly to save time and then find that some words have been lost or some extra letters have appeared. One pretty well has to proofread everything twice before submitting comments if one wants to avoid these unintended errors. Haste makes waste and criticism from Rupert.

Audi is getting the V6 TDI.

This 140 hp engine is used across the world, VW have sold it to Mistubishi (outlander), Dodge, Chrysler and many other companies, as well as of course Audi, Seat and Skoda.

But Audi USA will only use the V6 TDI. And this is a brand new common rail 2.0 TDI. Only the brand new Tiguan will have it so far, and the US Jetta.

Since the Jetta (transverse engine) is built on a different chassis than the similar-sized Audi A4 (longitudinal engine), and each vehicle has different suspension tuning and interiors, you're comparing apples to oranges. But, yes, both are good choices.

Have you seen the cargo room in the upcoming Jetta wagon? Amazing! Anyone who thinks they need a utility vehicle to haul their gear needs to check out the new wagons.

Although the smaller Golf / A3 share chassis and powertrain, again interiors and tuning are different. The A3 has a more useable cargo space, IMHO. Both are excellent and fun vehicles, unfortunately many versions of the A3 are not available in North America - can't go wrong with either one.

I don't think this will sell well in the US manily because of diesel stereotyping, but also because of the lack of ultra low sulfer diesel. And yeah, I don't like cheap Audis and would much rather have a VW.

ULSD will be in plenty of places by next March. And people will like 40/50 on the window sticker. The rest of the experience will be identical to the gasoline version.

I thought ULSD is everywhere now? doesn't stop the shitty soot from coming out of the diesel tail pipes anyway...looking forward to the new gen diesels.... HURRY PLEASE!!!!!

The "New gen" (Ie the ones we have in Europe) don't suffer from smoke and soot, due to better injection and filters (most soot is caused by flooding the engine with fuel which comes out charred as soot).

How efficient will this be? I wish VW would improve reliability! Why does it have to cost way more! I love the wagon as an efficient family car!

ULSD is already everywhere and is now the standard fuel for on-road fuel in America. I have a diesel and have not seen a single fuel stop with 500 ppm sulfur in months. One has to search for LSD in the most remote areas of the country. Even Murfy Oil (Wal-Mart) has switched to ULSD, but they held out longer than most.

VW will offer this same TDI engine for the Jetta, Jetta SportWagon, and Tiguan SUV. They will offer a 3.0 V-6 for the Touareg TDI in late '08. Other announcements may follow, but I expect they will not offer the 2.0 for the Passat-but maybe--the 3.0. No announcement yet, however. The Passat TDI gets the old 1.9 for Europe, so I don't see anything coming for a while with compression-ignition for that car in the U.S. The 1.9 can't pass emissions in any U.S. in any state. That's why we did not have a 2007 Jetta TDI.

Can I buy a VW Jetta 2008 TDI in europe with euros and ship to US? How should I go about this transaction. I would like to drive in europe for a few months.
