Mercedes Benz does 4.6 million Km, now that's a reliable car.

apperantly, thts tru. in a modern s-class (or any of its german rivals), its f-ing retarded to find how to turn on the a/c or radio by using a knob. and with all those gadgets, they can cause a distraction when driving. when tht breaks, its very costly to repair. a lexus, infiniti, or acura, or better yet most american luxury carmakers, the a/c button and radio controls are there. therefore its practical and simple, and less to repair and spend.

Mercedes always made extremely reliable, innovative and robust cars. Early 90s there were some problems on some models and later on we got the rubbish ML and early A-class. Some purists may complain about the interior quality drop from the 90s and honestly I have to agree with them.

But Mercedes is back, since the launch of the new generation cars (S-class, CL and now C-class) quality and reliability is totally back. The reassuring "thunks" and "clunks" when open/close a door/boot/bonnet are back.

Please, spare me your bullshit. It's not making any sense. I don't care if you like Lexus cars, but don't go and disrespect the household brands in the business.

The Germans have always been good mechanical engineers but fell short in electrical engineering. I had 3 Audis in the eighties (all plagued with electrical problems) and I finally gave up on Audi for that reason. I recently returned to Audi by leasing an A6 Quattro and will be looking to replace it next spring when the lease terminates. Only minor warning light problems appear to persist with this brand. The car is perfect in every other way. I don't know why German cars have become so needlessly complex with the most horrible example being BMW's dreaded iDrive. Mercedes is wasting money on overly complex safety gimmicks when they could be improving in other areas like building aluminum bodies, installing S-Class seats in all models, and using Torsen differentials in their AWD systems.

This had to be in the Sun Belt area instead of the Rust Belt area . After that many miles the only thing you would be hanging on to is the steering wheel . So, no matter how good the car is made, rust is the big equalizer there and here as well

So? A Toyota Prius has done over 400,000 km and is far more complex than that old slow diesel. Hybrids are the future.

They started after numerous tries. I used to have a 240D from '79 and it took a few tries, but they eventually started up.

As a former owner, I expected the car to start-up poorly in the winters. No complaints on my end. Eventually the combustion chambers heated up enough for the engine to clatter to life.

It's not secret that older Merc were almost overengineered, because offcourse German cars weren't allowed to go wrong. Old S-classes, old SEL, old SECs, .. they all could do over a million km with ease.

Also there are countless Toyota's and Lexus out there that have done more than this slow diesel. Toyota just doesn't brag about it like Mercedes. They don't need to brag about it.

any used MB before 95 is good to buy since electronics werent has complex to work or maintain as those after tht yr.

Basically anything with square headlamps is good, including the old SL and old old S class.

How many MB actually last that long? I seriously doubted if all the MB lasted that long. Why don't all do a research on this website and see who the 2006 king of recall? MB is pretty high on that list.

Want talk realibility, get Japanese brand, Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, and Infiniti. MB are NOT what it use to be, so stop living in the past.

It just amazes me that an article about a car that has achieved 4.6million!! km turns into a Lexus fan haven of negativity..instead of a reasoned discussion about the accomplishment, whoever the manufacturer. For the Lexus guys its all about the propoganda and brand loyalty to a point of fanaticism...really sad.

This is no suprise tyt these benzdiesels last long. I know someone from the biggest MB dealer in the dc area whos rebuilding an 89 240d.

They didnt make the W123s 240D or any other chassis in 89. Trust me I had one.

Lexus fanclub members quit talking trash now that Mercedes has to show for something they built. MB quality and reliability hasn't been great all these years but they are improving. MB's are still bought off the lot no matter how bad of times MB are going through. There level of luxury is still up there and the rides are still comfortable despite the darker days of MB reliability and quality.

The current generations of MB's are of high quality. reliability is still to be known. So far my S550 is holding up great. Quiet, luxurious, all expected from a Benz.

MB is NOt #1 number one, BMW has just outsold Mb worldwide this past june. Do a search on this website and see for yourself.

Obviously never been to Europe. Japanese cars sell well in the economy market i admit, Honda, Nissan, Toyota etc etc. But of course, the Japanese only make economy cars i suppose. In terms of luxury vehicles, Audi, Mercedes and BMW dominate, and it's no mystery as to why this is so.

Because they have been the only ones doing so for quite some time now. The world has had Lexus, Infiniti and Acura for roughly 20 years now, most of which the three of them set their ambitions on being successful in the toughest automotive market in the world. What's unique about Europe though is that the Germans also make plenty of economy cars too.

Honda and Toyota combined sell less than Ford or Vauxhall in Europe.

North America doesn't even know what Vauxhall is, and Toyota already sells more than Ford, period.
