Chrysler Imperial plans scrapped

Back in May we were super excited to learn that Chrysler would be putting the Chrysler Imperial Concept into production in 2010. Unfortunately news comes today from Detroit that Chrysler has just killed plans to produce the large luxury sedan.

CAW President, Buzz Hargrove, told the Detroit Free Press that Chrysler recently contacted him to tell him that production plans for the Imperial Concept have been scrapped due to pending legislation in the US Congress to increase fuel-efficiency standards.

All they need to focus on is the next 300, let that be their flagship, make sure they don't screw it up. By 2010 it'll be time for it anyway.

looks like most of you are happy to see this car die but I'm disappointed. I saw the Imperial at an auto show in person, it was a sweet looking ride. I'm sure none of what made it stand out (like the very very rich interior) would have made it into production, but the concept car was cool.

I don't really care either way, but that car was ugly as sin. I would take a 300 over that every time. It reminded me of a Rolls Royce golf cart, supposed to look cool but ends up just looking pathetically sad.

They should have used this chassis to introduce americans to Large swift moving turbo-diesel powered cars. Maybe with the mild-hybrid they co-developed with GM and BMW. Now that is really where they missed a unique opportunity.

I feel like this: If you want a fuel sipper, YOU go and buy YOU one! This is America! Don't try to force your personal agenda on others. The U.S. government killed this car, as ugly as it was going to be. On a different note, this is America, and if you don't like it, you don't have to buy it!

I bought a new Imperial when it was still a true Imperial. It fact it was the 1972 model which was really the last of the true Imperials as they later simply stuck an Imperial badge on a slightly fancier New Yorker. I'm not surprised that Cerberus has scrapped the Imperial and am holding off on the purchase of any Chrysler product until the final structure of Chrysler becomes clear.
