2008 BMW X3 Hybrid

The BMW X3 compact SUV is now in it's fourth year of production and BMW has chosen the X3 to pilot the hybrid engine jointly developed with General Motors and Daimler Chrysler.
With more competition emerging to snatch market share in the SUV market, fuel economy together with safety appear to be driving the market in both the US and Europe and BMW is looking to deliver both with the X3 Hybrid.

The X3 is available with 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre diesels in Europe.

What size engine will this be offered with? According to the article the engine on its own will develop 145 lb/ft of torque which would put it in line with BMW's 1.6 litre petrol engine.

"Inventing" things is a Toyota thing, and hybrids still are a short term non-solution to a long term problem, no-matter who's making them. I wonder will does this one actually deliver on its fuel economy promises. Those super caps are lighter than batteries which should at least keep the weight down.
