Lexus Supercar - Lexus IS-F will be Sell this year end 2007!

The spec sheet more than grants it performance car status, based on the proven rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS platform, it will feature a performance-tuned 5.0-litre V8 engine, expected to produce approximately 300kW and more than 470Nm of torque. The gearbox is something else altogether as the IS-F will premier the world’s first eight-speed (yes, eight) direct sport-shift transmission, able to change gears in 0.1 seconds - a mere 0.05 seconds slower than gear changes in a Formula One car. This should send the IS-F to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds from a standing start - although the all important top speed is currently unknown - with eight gears to run out, it will certainly be impressive.

Hopefully it will debut in 2007 and we can see some side by side comparisons. It will be interesting to see what Lexus comes to the plate with after watching in the wings for a good 10 years or so.

It better be good.

Just like the introduction of the LS improved the MB, BMW and Audi, this too will improve the M3 and the C63 and any other competitor, if Cadillac or others.

i think all the cars coming out will be great for all different types of buyers. the m3 will still probably sell the most being that it has the recognition as being the best ( although rs4 is better ) i live in ny and have only seen one rs4 my whole life.

i think the IS-F will be a great performer even if it doesnt beat the rs-4, m3, c63. it will still be a great car.
the only thing i HATE about the car so far is the body kit. it really looks like some kids put this crap together. otherwise, the interior and specs seem perfect.
i have a 2005 m3 now and can admit when im shopping for a car in a year, ill consider all of them depending on the tests and pricing so lexus definitely has a shot. too bad the is350 looks better than the isf.
as far as people making a big deal on 0-60 times, think about it if the rs-4 does it in 4.2 and the others do it in 4.5 or even 4.8 .6 seconds wont make a different on the streets in racing, these machines are all great and it will all come down to the driver.

I agree, I really like the IS-F. Hopefully that heavily styled body kit will come with a delete option...

Good point. I don't know why people buy these machines to race in the streets anyways. Go to a local track and track it. You'll never get true performance from them from the streets.

I think they have done their homework. The question is did they shoot for the top of the stack, or midway up?

Sounds like a great car and can't wait for it to arrive, but don't make a fuss about a gearbox that's already been done, even though not in a 8 speed. Does Audi S-tronic or VW DSG sound familiar? And both Audi and VW is bringing out the 7 speed next year followed by an 8 speed for the higher ranked models.

The interior shots i've seen dont look all that different from the standard IS. So basically everything you said srries no weight because nobody knows how it steers, nobody knows about the ride and nobody knows what the body control will be like. Other than that splendid post though!!

What has lexus ever ever done performance wise in there history for you to actully think this car will compete with the M3 or RS4? I have the answer

NOTHING!

"It'll have faster and more accurate steering with superior feedback, rides more tauter with better body control, less body roll."

um...no lexus has ever done this relative to it's bmw competitor. why would this one? great handling is what bmw's are made of.

i agree it will loose some luxury attributes compare to the fully loaded IS350, but i am sure it will still have more luxury than the M3,RS4 and C63 AMG.

I see the Lexus F-series as being more in line with Mercedes AMG cars also. Fast but still focusing on the luxury element more so that the M or RS cars.

People who have been into performance cars for a long time are going to be extremely hesitant to buy a Lexus no matter how good the reviews are.

So I wonder who is the target market really. BMW/Audi/MB owners are so fanatical I can't imagine that many will make the switch. So the market is just Japanese car owners who want some more grunt. Therefore I don't think the car will ever be thought of as competitive.

Seriously, how many Lexus have you seen at a track day ever? About zero? How many Porsche and BMWs? Thousands!

There marketing language is hilarious: "direct sport-shift transmission, able to change gears in 0.1 seconds - a mere 0.05 seconds slower than gear changes in a Formula One car"

So shifting takes twice as long as a Formula 1 car. Brilliant!

ThierryHenry14ThierryHenry14 - 7/20/2007 2:14:15 PM

I believe in terms of shifting, thats very slow. Others measures shifting in milliseconds ie. BMW 80 milliseconds, MB 90 milliseconds. in case you do not know what this means, it means:

Avg. F1 .000003 s
Ferrari .000005 s
BMW .000008 s
MB .000009 s
Lexus .1 s

That means its bad!

An automatic gearbox that shifts in 100ms is very impressive, yet the Germans already had one 2 years ago. ZF 100ms anyone?

Other than in F1 they shift in around 30ms, VW 6-speed DSG wet-clutch (also called S-tronic at Audi) shifts in 6 ms. The Veyron's Ricardo 7-speed wet-clutch does it in 8 ms. But the fastest is also from VW, it's the brandnew 7-speed DSG dry-clutch (saves 7kg) for VW's smaller models and is said to shift in under 6ms.

I read in an interview with the big boss of Lexus that he insisted the LS460 had to have 8 speeds in the transmission. Because he wanted to beat Mercedes and be first with 8 speeds. At first they were going to use the 6-speed auto from the updated LS430 but in the end added 2 overdrive gears and made the final drive higher. So it is not a new transmission like the 7G-tronic (launched in 2003 - 9 speeds - 7 forward and 2 reverse). Guess what, the LS430 5-speed had lock-up torque converter in 2-3-4-5 gears, the updated 6-speed had lock-up torque conv in 2-3-4-5-6 and the "new" and "revolutionairy" 8-speed has lock-up in 2-3-4-5-6-7-8. See anything ?

Don't get fooled by marketing and clever publicity. Think outside that box;

I just don't understand some of the brilliant reasoning going on here. Because Lexus hasn't done a performance car in their very short history, that means the IS-F is destined for doom? Lexus just should not worry about ever trying to produce a performance car because they haven't done one already? What sense does this reasoning make? I'll tell you...

NONE.

Just as you naysayers call bs on predictions about the IS-F being "great," I call bs on your predictions about it being "crap." So where does that leave us? I'll tell you...

NOWHERE.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a fan of lexus. I love German Cars, but I will not bash this car until I get behind the wheels and try one out on the tracks.

Then I will let the car speak for itself, and try to be as non-bias in my judgement as possible.

Besides, if testing done to it is on a track, then its "meant" for the track.

That bulgy hood, sneekey headlights, and that up in the air trunk seems to me that Lexus had 10 year old kids design this. As you can tell, Lexus does not care about its customers by craming a big engine in a very small cramped car. I wonder how well it will do in crash ratings since the hood is already bent.

Well Lexus went overboard with that hood, its twice as bulged as any other car.

"ANd lets not forget the criticism that BMW got for it's 5 series headlights (and the 3 series as well), they were said to be very "Japanese".

How can it be Japanese? You sound really ignorant yourself because there is no Japanese car out there that have 5 series headlights or even the 3 series. Soon im sure Lexus will decide to copy it and call it the latest L-finesse rubbish.

I have come to a decision for my next vehicle: I'm keeping the S4 and getting another car that's easier to drive the "other" half of the year. The S5 coupe, C63 AMG, IS-F, 335i (not the new M3), and even a used Carrera 4 are all on my list. Yes, I bounce around a LOT, but that's because this is a high-class problem, and I do enjoy trying to solve it.

Oh and- as I was saying. I'm excited for the IS-F to come out. I've already read an amazing review of the C63, in which it was likened to the RS4 in that it's the best-driving M-B of late. Hopefully, the same can be said about the new Lexus.

Before die-hard Lexus fans start badgering me about how I thought the IS-F was stupid-looking, I've come to the realization that it's just the color of the car they had on the show circuit that amplified the scoops. I can see it looking very good in black or dark gray, as I already love the IS350's design.

Listen S4, you would look like a fool in that IS-F. the body kit screams mid-life crisis, it's horrid and unbalanced.

I am not buying an Aston Martin or Maserati to put through the winter, sevor! Remember- I'm KEEPING the S4. The C63/IS-F/335i would be my car to drive in the winter and fall! And also- if you cared to read what I wrote -I said that the IS-F would look very good in black or gray. Imagine it in a color other than purple, and you see what I mean.

Soon, I will have a car for every month of the year, hah.

the term supercar is too widely used for "non-warranted" cars that the company claims can go fast. Supercars should be used for the top 3-5% of the cars in the market.

ie. 1980s/90s, F40, F50, 959, Diablo SV, etc. They were the top cars of the days.

now days, the term supercars must evolve to only include the likes of Veyrons, CCX, Zonda S, GT2, etc.

LF-A = performance car

IS-F = Entry level sports sedan
