Mercedes develops new petrol engine with diesel technology

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to display several new frugal drivetrain concepts at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the latest being a new ‘DiesOtto’ engine that will be revealed for the first time later this month. The new engine features engine concepts that characterize both diesel and petrol motors, and promises to be as clean as petrol engines but as efficient as diesels.

I hope that this design will allow one to run on gas or diesel. This would work if the driver can select a setting within some variable compression ratio scheme.

Yes. Diesels are dumb and gasoline-hybrids are the better choice. This will not work. MB engineers can brag all they want, this type of engine is impossible. Maybe Toyota or Lexus can make it, but not a low tech company like MB.

david989 has not thought this through or he is to close to Toyota. Technically, the use of compresion alone to ignite any fuel is entirely possible. MB has probably come up with a way to vary the compression ratio as compression ignition is affected by ambient temperature and fuel characteristics. MB may have ratained the old familiar glow plugs as well for starting in cold Northern climates.
