New Mercedes engine does 39MPG in a S-Class

Mercedes is attempting to beat rival Volkswagen to the market with the world’s first mass produced petrol engine that combines the torque and fuel economy of modern diesels with cleaner emissions. Efficient features that have been added to the engine include direct injection, turbocharging and variable compression. Unlike the VW design, the Mercedes engine doesn’t require special synthetic fuels and runs on regular petrol.

I wouldn't doubt that if something were to go wrong with the engine, that it would be a fairly substantial price for repair, compared to their other engines.

Still though, that's a whollllle lot of power for a mainstream 1.8L engine. With more research, they could probably get the equivalent power of Audi's 4.2 TDI out of a v6 DiesOtto. I'd take one of these of the wimpy dieselhybrid S class.

I agree. Actually 238 hp in a S class won't fly. But the days of a 1.8L 350 hp engine are prob still a few years off, at least.

I disagree. There are probably thousands of S550 buyers who have no idea what sort of engine is in their car. As long as it isn't a complete slug it shouldn't have any trouble selling. Plus people who are interested in using less gas may be attracted to the engine.

That engine rightfully belongs in an econobox version of the C-Class. A cheapskate like me would buy one. I'm an Audi diehard and that would be one way that Mercedes could get me to switch. Another way would be to start selling the Vision C220 Bluetec in North America.

incredible mileage for a full-size car.

ideal for the person who needs the room/comfort but wants to be more environmentally sensitive. (and is therefore willing to compromise on performance)

Like M53R, I am convinced that an S-Class would be too slow with this engine. There has to be a trade-off between fuel economy and acceleration in all speed ranges unless you can defy the laws of physics.

I MEAN HOW FAST ARE YOU REALLY PLANNING ON GOING WITH A 550? Most s class drivers are in it for the cruise, not the 0-60, even though its an added benefit. IF YOUD WANT FAST YOU PROBABLY WOULDNT EVEN GO FOR AN S. unless its a 63/65 amg.
